West Ham 0-0 Man City LIVE! Benrahma pen wins it - Carabao Cup result, match stream & latest updates today

A resolute West Ham United held Manchester City at bay for 90 minutes before winning 5-3 on penalties.

On what was a big day for the club anyway following the news that the London Stadium was in line for an increased capacity, David Moyes’ side continued on their upward trajectory.

In what was a game of few chances, the home side were rarely carved open and, though City dominated the possession, they could not find many genuine openings.

That’s now four wins of the spin for West Ham, who looked a real danger in cup competition this season. Indeed, both the Europa League and the Carabao Cup look genuine avenues for success and, given their recent form, there will be a huge sense of optimism going into the next round.

Moyes’ side have just knocked out the holders. It’s time to take them seriously.

CHANCE!

90:00 - Foden pulls a driven shot just wide.

Penalties await.

Soucek off his game

21:32 , Jonathan Gorrie

86:00 - A couple of times tonight, Tomas Soucek has had shots blazed over the bar.

At what point do his lack of goals become a worry?

Chances are few and far between

21:29 , Jonathan Gorrie

84:00 - Not much in the way of genuine chances to report but both sides are attacking well.

Areola has looked very good when called upon, however.

Oh how the other half live!

City getting closer

21:20 , Jonathan Gorrie

75:00 - With Foden on, City are starting to string passes together in dangerous areas.

His threaded ball almost has Gundogan in for a tap in, though Areola is alert enough to stop it.

Change for City

Very impressive from this man tonight

Game slowing down

21:11 , Jonathan Gorrie

66:00 - After a whirlwind second-half, the tempo has naturally dropped.

Still, you suspect both sides have an extra gear.

This feels very much like: “We’re still in this so we might as well have a go”. David Moyes sends on Benrahma, Bowen and Fornals, replacing his entire front-three.

Cup fever

21:04 , Jonathan Gorrie

59:00 - After a bleak first-half, this is really opening up.

A brilliant game at the moment.

WHAT A SAVE

21:02 , Jonathan Gorrie

57:00 - Areola keeps Stones’ header from flying in after a wicked De Bruyne free-kick delivery.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

21:00 , Jonathan Gorrie

Could Yarmolenko have hit that first time? He just gave Zinchenko chance to set himself and work out his angles for the block. Big chance.

GREAT CHANCE FOR WEST HAM!

21:00 , Jonathan Gorrie

54:00 - Steffen saves very well after Masuaku’s shot is deflected, while Yaromolenko is crowded out on the rebound.

Gundogan misses!

20:57 , Jonathan Gorrie

52:00 - Big miss.

Palmer sets Gundogan through in the box and, while a difficult angle, the German puts his shot wide.

CHANCE FOR WEST HAM!

20:54 , Jonathan Gorrie

50:00 - Masuaku, who is seeing a lot of the ball, hits the side netting with his side largely camped inside the City box.

A difficult angle, though.

Malik Ouzia’s half-time thoughts

20:34 , Jonathan Gorrie

West Ham haven’t got near City in possession terms but Areola’s been relatively untroubled, though Ake should really have headed City in front on the stroke of the whistle. Trouble is, Guardiola’s bench isn’t half bad.

Half-time: West Ham 0-0 Man City

20:34 , Jonathan Gorrie

Not a classic at half-time but City were starting to turn the screw towards the end.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

20:28 , Jonathan Gorrie

It’s not been vintage from City, to be fair. They’ve had all the ball but Cole Palmer is playing in that role that Phil Foden’s made his own in recent weeks, dropping in off the front line, and West Ham’s centre-backs have been relatively untroubled.

The Moyes effect

20:28 , Jonathan Gorrie

41:00 - West Ham look so organised.

Even when City float balls into the box, or attempt their trademark cutbacks from the byline, there’s a West Ham player there to rid of the danger.

City back on top

20:23 , Jonathan Gorrie

37:00 - City settling into their rhythm now.

Mahrez is getting on the ball just outside the box and, usually, that means bad news for the oppostion.

Where City were penned in 10 minutes or so ago, it’s now the home side.

A closer look at tonight’s action

20:21 , Jonathan Gorrie

Ben Johnson doing well

20:19 , Jonathan Gorrie

32:00 - Raheem Sterling cannot get a sniff.

As impressive as Johnson has been going forward, he’s also marking one of England’s best players out of the game.

Game opening up

20:16 , Jonathan Gorrie

28:00 - Game opening up.

City, oddly, can’t seem to get much control in the middle of the park. The Mark Noble effect?

West Ham have settled well and, at this early stage, it looks like a moment of genius would be what it takes to unlock them.

Fernandinho doing Fernandinho things

20:15 , Jonathan Gorrie

CHANCE FOR CITY!

20:12 , Jonathan Gorrie

25:00 - Palmer - who’s been in the goals of late - sees his shot well by Areola.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

20:10 , Jonathan Gorrie

Massive waste of a set piece from West Ham. You couldn’t move this week for stats about the number of dead-ball assist Aaron Cresswell has racked up in the last couple of season but the full-back dummies and allows Noble to clip a high, lofty one into the box that Dawson gets do but hasn’t a prayer of doing anything with.

Good spell for West Ham

20:09 , Jonathan Gorrie

22:00 - Moyes’ side try to work a free-kick and, while the floated ball to Craig Dawson came to nothing, they’re pinning City back in their own penalty box.

End to end stuff!

20:06 , Jonathan Gorrie

20:00 - Mark Noble has a shot parried away by Zack Steffen which then sees City counter-attack, where Kevin De Bruyne forces a save from Areola.

West Ham growing into the game

20:05 , Jonathan Gorrie

18:00 - West Ham are starting to grow into the game, which is becoming a theme under Moyes.

As Malik mentioned, Ben Johnson looks a brilliant outlet down the right.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

20:02 , Jonathan Gorrie

Ben Johnson’s been impressive in these opening 15 minutes, making a goal-saving tackle on Gundogan and giving Sterling nowhere to go one-on-one. He has also run the ball straight off the park on the Hammers’ only real attack of potential though and they can’t afford to waste those opportunities if they’re expecting to see as little of the ball as they have so far.

Could be a long night ahead for West Ham

19:59 , Jonathan Gorrie

12:00 - City haven’t been able to carve out too many openings but have pushed their hosts behind the ball for most of the game so far.

The fact that you still wouldn’t write West Ham off says a lot about how solid they are under Moyes.

Familiar pattern

19:57 , Jonathan Gorrie

08:00 - Ilkay Gundogan is almost played into the box, though West Ham do well to overcrowd him.

City dominating but the home side looking nice and compact.

19:54 , Jonathan Gorrie

05:00 - All City, as you might expect, in the early stages.

Mahrez and Palmer link up well but West Ham manage to see the ball out for a goalkick.

Evening Standard prediction

18:26 , Jonathan Gorrie

West Ham boss Moyes has been on a relentless run of taking every match seriously, including the Carabao Cup, with good results so far.

That may catch up with the Hammers later but a youthful City side could struggle at London Stadium. Alas, even Guardiola’s bench has enough to trouble any team and this one could go all the way to penalties.

A 1-1 draw.

Early Man City team news

18:21 , Jonathan Gorrie

Ferran Torres (foot) and Liam Delap (ankle) are unavailable for City with Raheem Sterling (back) a doubt after sitting out the win at Brighton.

Youngsters such as Cole Palmer and Luke Mbete could be selected if Guardiola looks to freshen up his team.

Guardiola said: “We play on Wednesday so we will see in training [on Monday] and Tuesday and after we will see what is the best decision. Some of [the youngsters] are going to play, yes.”

Early West Ham team news

18:13 , Jonathan Gorrie

The Carabao Cup tie will likely see both managers look to their benches, particularly after recent action in league and Europe.

Vladimir Coufal (groin) remains a doubt for West Ham while Alex Kral is yet to return to the squad after testing positive for Covid-19. Alphonse Areola, Mark Noble, Manuel Lanzini and Issa Diop were among the players to feature in the last round and could return here.

A big day off the field for West Ham

18:12 , Jonathan Gorrie

West Ham have been granted permission to expand the capacity of the London Stadium to 62,500 seats.

The ground, built for the London 2012 Olympics but home to the Hammers since their departure from Upton Park in 2016, currently has its capacity limited to 60,000 on football match days.

The increase will come once the club complete a safety certificate application, and will likely see the club’s attendance record broken, with the current mark of 59,988 set during the Premier League clash against Everton in March 2019.
