Graham Westley insists his Preston squad's fitness levels are only halfway towards where he wants them to be.

Westley has endured a torrid start to life as manager at Deepdale, winning only two of his first 15 games since replacing Phil Brown and finding himself at the centre of some bizarre and controversial incidents.

In his previous role as Stevenage manager, Westley was noted for his work in driving up the physical conditioning of his players and claims the fruit of similar changes implemented at North End will be seen after a full pre-season.

"You can't go from where the team was to where the team needs to be in the course of a couple of months, especially when you've got a fixture list which is congested," he said.

"Endurance wise we're having to take it much easier than I would like. If I were to say they've probably gone halfway forward from where they where towards where I want them to be by measure then that will give you an indication that there's a lot more you'll be seeing coming out of a Preston North End team as I get it fit.

"Certainly at the start of next season I would expect you to see a side that's had a full pre-season, that's been properly conditioned, that's in the right physical shape and then you can really get the best out of your technical abilities and your tactical abilities."
