For £2.5million, John McGinn has been worth every penny since joining Aston Villa from Hibernian.

But there are now reports suggesting that Steven Gerrard is open to letting McGinn leave the club with the Villa boss fed up of him 'whinging' behind the scenes.

Should Villa let the midfielder go then there will not be a shortage of teams wanting to sign him, and below we look at the possible sides he could join.

Manchester United

The Red Devils are crying out for someone like McGinn. Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, Man Utd have struggled to challenge for a league title let alone win one.

A big issue for United has been in midfield. Paul Pogba was a liability, Nemanja Matic didn't have the legs while Scott McTominay and Fred just don't cut it for a team wanting to win major trophies.

McGinn may not be Roy Keane but he is exactly the type of player they need in the middle of the park. The 27-year-old is a box-to-box midfielder and has the type of aggression and intensity needed for Erik ten Hag's new era. They should not miss this chance to sign him.

Tottenham

Antonio Conte is currently bolstering his Spurs side ahead of their Champions League quest for 2022/23.

Yves Bissouma has only just walked through the door, but Conte is also admirer of McGinn and would be open to signing him after turning down the chance to sign Paulo Dybala.

The big question is, will Daniel Levy cough up £50million or more to get the Scot? That answer is no - especially when there are other areas where Tottenham need to strengthen more.

Liverpool

Last summer, Jurgen Klopp was keeping tabs on McGinn's future at Aston Villa. Klopp even spoke to his fellow Scottish international Andy Robertson after being impressed by his workrate. McGinn is exactly the type of player who would fit into the system at Liverpool under Klopp. The Reds are exploring other targets though, including Jude Bellingham who is their 'top priority' for next summer.

Newcastle

Eddie Howe has a huge budget for the summer and have already signed one Aston Villa player in Matty Targett. The English coach is hoping to challenge for a European spot for the upcoming season and McGinn is a player that can help them continue their push up the table.

But would McGinn want to join a club which is still a few years away from a Champions League spot at the age of 27?

Borussia Dortmund

The German side sold Erling Haaland to Manchester City and have the money to spend on new players. They have already signed Haaland's replacement in Karim Adeyemi and want a few more players before the start of the season. While McGinn doesn't have any links to Edin Terzic's Dortmund, they are currently one of the favourites to land him should he leave Villa.
