Rangers full-back Steven Whittaker has targeted an Old Firm comeback after making his return to full training.

Whittaker has not played since the Christmas Eve defeat by St Mirren and underwent hernia surgery last month, but now hopes to face Celtic in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League at Ibrox on March 25.

The 27-year-old told the club's official website: "I'm gradually getting there and it's been a long process, I've had to hold myself back at times."

He added: "But I'm at the stage now where I can try and get a bit of training under my belt and hopefully I'll be back fit as quickly as possible.

"I am just looking to get in as many sessions as I can with the boys before the Celtic game."

Rangers manager Ally McCoist could do with having Whittaker back even sooner, with centre-backs Dorin Goian and Carlos Bocanegra both suspended for Saturday's game with Dundee United at Tannadice.

"It's going to be strange this weekend with Carlos and Dorin both out as they have been our central defensive pairing for the majority of the season," Whittaker said.

"But Ross Perry has come into the team and done well and we have others that can move in there as well."
