Who sang ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’ better: Clinton or Trump?

As the World Series shifts to Chicago for Game 3 on Friday night, viewers will get a glimpse of a Wrigley Field tradition: a celebrity leading the crowd in a sing-along of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh-inning stretch.

Harry Caray, the late Cubs broadcaster, is credited with starting what has become a staple for the Windy City faithful. Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are among the scores of famous people who have gamely taken to the microphone over the years.

The Chicago-born Clinton, then first lady, joined Caray in the broadcast booth on April 4, 1994, after throwing out the first pitch. According to the Chicago Tribune, Clinton, who has described herself as a lifelong Cubs fan, was heartily booed during her introduction. Before leaving, Caray planted a kiss on her cheek.

Trump, accompanied by his future wife, Melania, took a stab at “Take Me Out” on July 9, 2000. Trump was booed too, as he struggled through the tune.

The real estate mogul told the New York Post he wasn’t nervous for his ballpark singing debut — but throwing out the first pitch “was a bit nerve-wracking.”

While both Clinton and Trump’s renditions were not exactly in key, they were certainly better than Scottie Pippen’s take on “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during last week’s National League Championship Series clincher. The former Chicago Bulls forward completely butchered the song, forgetting the lyrics before he even got to the second verse.

The Cubs haven’t announced who will be singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during this year’s World Series, but chances are Caray, who died in 1998, will make a posthumous visit. Earlier this year, after renovations to the bleachers were completed, Caray appeared on Wrigley Field’s new video board to lead the Cubs faithful in song.
