Frank Lampard has revealed that he apologised to Fabio Tavares after sending the Coventry City striker out on loan on Friday.

The Sky Blues player has struggled to get game time this season both under Mark Robins – for whom he played just over an hour in the Carabao Cup win at Bristol in August – and, more recently, under the new head coach who gave him a couple of minutes at the end of the Championship win at Millwall in December.

He has been a regular in the matchday squad but was consistently overlooked when it came to being handed match minutes. And when League One Burton Albion came calling last week, Lampard sanctioned a move for the 24-year-old who is out of contract in the summer and likely to be moving on.

Asked about the decision to send him out on loan, Lampard explained: “He deserves to go and play. He trains brilliantly, with a smile on his face. He’s a great teammate and he’s not playing, and I apologised to him for not giving him any minutes."

He added: “I have just come in and I am trying to find players and who I can bring on and so I apologised to him the other day and he absolutely deserves it because he’s been an absolute professional. He’s a young lad so good luck to him and we wish him very, very well.”

Tavares was registered in time to make his debut for the Brewers at Barnsley on Saturday where he went on in the 71st minute in a goalless draw at Oakwell.
