Why fearless Aberdeen ARE the real deal as Jonny Hayes rips into notion that Thelin's team will fall away
Jonny Hayes has ripped into suggestions that Aberdeen will crumble after their electric start to the season - and believes his old club have what it takes to stay on Celtic's toes.
Jimmy Thelin has quickly hit the ground running in the Premiership by leading his new team to 10 victories in their first 11 league matches, fighting back from 2-0 down against the Hoops to claim an impressive point at Parkhead last month. The Dons were sent back down to Earth when Celtic got their revenge by trouncing them 6-0 in the semi-final of the Premier Sports Cup at Hampden, but Thelin's side were able to bounce back in style by defeating Dundee 4-1 at Pittodrie before the international break to ensure they remain behind the champions at the top of the table on goal difference only.
And former Reds winger Hayes - who hung up his boots at the end of his second spell at Pittodrie last summer and now coaches for Celtic - reckons Aberdeen's winning machine can roll on. Speaking to gambling.com, he said: "Yes, 100 per cent (Aberdeen can maintain their early-season form). They’ve got that mood in the dressing room and they’re playing well.
"When you find ways to win it's infectious and it lasts a long time. So for me, yes, they can 100 per cent maintain it. They have been brilliant. It's been a phenomenal start. I've watched them with interest right from the start of the season as I know many of the staff and players. They’re right up there they look like a proper team now."
The Irishman - who also spent three seasons at Parkhead - also praised Thelin's fearless approach in taking on the Old Firm, with Aberdeen scoring an impressive 2-1 win against Rangers at Pittodrie last month. Hayes added: "It's certainly different and enjoyable to watch. I think his character is a lot different to what we've been used to in Scotland as well.
"He's very reserved, he's not very vocal about decisions going against him. It's quite refreshing to see. His mannerisms on the touchline are brilliant as well, I enjoy watching him.
"His substitutions are frightening - really, really good. I've seen their last few games and even when things aren't going their way, he seems to know what to do to change it, and turn a draw or loss into a win."
