Why this has been karate girl's best year yet

A TEENAGER'S sights are on British and World Championships karate appearances in 2023 after high levels of achievement this year.

Ruby Owen, 13, from Woolston Karate Clubs, is enjoying her most successful year to date, having recently taken her medal count to 22 in 2022.

In the Cardinal Newman High School student's most recent event, she represented All-Styles Karate Alliance Great Britain at the Welsh Karate league in Merthyr Tydfil and won gold in kata (patterned moves) for both under 14s and under 16s categories.

Her season's medal haul from competing in kata and kumite (fighting) features eight gold, five silver and and nine bronze.

The Woolston youngster is a second dan black belt who started karate aged five at Woolston Karate Clubs.

Chief instructor Darron McQuillan, fifth dan, and fellow coach John Cameron, fourth dan, said they are proud of Ruby as well as her teammates in the Woolston Karate Clubs squad after bringing home 105 medals in total in 2022.

Next stop for Ruby and her teammates in 2023 is the WUKF British Open Championships in London and WUKF World Championships in Dundee.
