Why UFC 200: Diaz vs. McGregor 2? Because Conor McGregor Gets What He Wants

Bellator Uses Conor McGregor Storming the Cage to Promote Tape-Delayed Dublin Card

Although a proposed rematch between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor left many shaking their heads, the fight was still made. Not only will there be a Diaz vs. McGregor 2, but it will also headline the biggest Ultimate Fighting Championship event of the year: UFC 200.

With Diaz having submitted McGregor in the second round of their fight, why make the rematch?

Because Conor McGregor wanted the fight, and Conor McGregor gets what he wants; that's why.

“After the (first) fight, Lorenzo (Fertitta) and I went up to Conor’s house and started talking about what he was thinking, what’s next, and he was obsessed, obsessed with fighting Nate Diaz again. Lorenzo and I tried arguing with him, let’s go back down do 145 and defend your title,” UFC president Dana White recently explained in an interview with ESPN's SportsCenter.

White went on to explain that as hard he and Fertitta tried, and even with McGregor's head coach, John Kavanagh, trying to persuade McGregor to at least get the fight at 155 pounds, McGregor would have none of it. Losing to Diaz was stuck in his craw and he wanted redemption.

So the UFC made the fight, as McGregor requested, at 170 pounds, and then put a stamp on it as the UFC 200 main event, despite there being no title at stake.

White said it wasn't a hard sell to get Diaz to agree.

It still didn't sit well with a lot of fans, but White explained why McGregor, despite holding up the featherweight championship picture by doing the rematch, was granted the fight.

“Conor McGregor is a guy that’s had fights fall out seven days before he’s supposed to defend his title. He steps up and he takes on all comers. The guy fights anybody, anywhere, anytime. He’s stepped up on late notice and done these things,” White recounted. “He wants this Nate Diaz fight. We’ll give it to him.”

Having been several months since McGregor unified the featherweight championship, the UFC decided to split it apart again, making an interim title bout between former champion Jose Aldo and top contender Frankie Edgar, with the winner promised a shot at McGregor in the Irishman's next fight.

“Win lose or draw in this fight against Nate Diaz, (McGregor) will go in and he will fight either Jose or Frankie, whoever wins at UFC 200.”
