Wigan Warriors captain Thomas Leuluai is still yet to make a decision on his future beyond 2022.

The half-back turns 37 tomorrow, and is still enjoying fine form in the current season.

The 39-time New Zealand international made a miraculous return to the field for the Challenge Cup final against Huddersfield.

Suffering a knee injury during the club’s Good Friday defeat to St Helens, he was expected to be sidelined for 12 weeks. However, the Wigan skipper got himself fit in just six in order to make an appearance from the bench at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He remains off-contract for the 2023 season. Head coach Matt Peet told Love Rugby League that chats are ongoing with the player, but he is yet to make his decision.

Matt Peet on Thomas Leuluai and future decision

On Leuluai’s future decision, Peet told Love Rugby League: “I don’t try and talk him in or out of it. I think when you’ve got so much respect for someone, it’s just really honest conversations. Sometimes it’s over a brew, sometimes it’s after training.

“Tommy will make the decision when he’s ready and I won’t expect it to be for a while, there’s a lot of rugby to be played yet.

“We’ll enjoy him for as long as he’s here. He’s so important to us as he’s proven recently. I can’t put into words how important he is to this club.”

When asked if he believes his captain could continue in 2023, Peet added: “There’s no doubt he could.

“It’s just whether he decides to or not. I’m guessing there will be a lot of things that come into that decision.”

The former London Broncos man has made 302 Super League appearances to date, 265 of them being for the Warriors. His contract expires at the end of the current campaign, having signed a one-year extension for 2022.
