Wigan coach Matt Peet believes in-form winger Liam Marshall has what it takes to make Shaun Wane’s England squad for the World Cup.

The 26-year-old has been in fine form for the Warriors this season. He scoring the match-winning try in their 16-14 win over Huddersfield in the Challenge Cup final a fortnight ago.

Marshall played for England Knights in their 56-4 win over Jamaica last year. Subsequently, he was named in Wane’s first training squad of 2022.

The Wigan academy product is yet to make an appearance for England’s senior side. However, he could be named in Wane’s squad on Monday for their upcoming match against the Combined Nations All Stars at Warrington.

Matt Peet backing Liam Marshall for England honours

Peet has been impressed with Marshall’s performances this season. And he is backing him to be part of Wane’s plans for the World Cup.

Peet said: “I certainly feels he has a chance.

“He is in and around the squad isn’t he so he has got to be pushing for that. He needs to be making sure his form is at his absolute best.

“He’s getting close to that in recent weeks and I am really pleased with his form. He has got great instincts and obviously he’s got the pace and skill to score points.

“He is also working really hard out of our own end doing the hard graft, which I think if he is to step up to the international arena, that will be the deciding factor really.

“If he can continue to be as good as some of the other English wingers in that area of the field then he gives himself every chance.”

England begin their World Cup preparations with a mid-season match against the Combined Nations All Stars at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington on Saturday, June 18.
