Chris Wilder believes Oxford United can achieve promotion this season

Manager Chris Wilder believes his young Oxford team are up to the challenge of winning promotion from npower League Two this season after their 2-0 victory at Bristol Rovers.

Wilder made no attempt to disguise his ambitions after superb first-half goals from Jake Forster-Caskey and Alfie Potter earned the U's the win on the opening day of the league season.

"A lot of clubs fancy their chances of promotion from League Two and we are one of them,'' said Wilder. "We scored two decent goals, but I was most pleased with how our young players adapted to playing in a really testing atmosphere. We had some experienced lads sitting in the stand and the ones that came in performed with a lot of credit.

"Matt Harrold was always going to give us problems in the air, but our two centre-backs coped well with a very tough afternoon and our goalkeeper came for a lot of crosses as we asked him to do.

"There were a lot of positions in which we didn't have much experience, but it never showed. I was just a bit disappointed that we didn't hit Rovers more on the counter-attack in the second half.''

Rovers boss Mark McGhee, who is still hoping to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes, felt his side were wasteful when they got into good positions.

"It was a hugely disappointing start for us. We gave away two poor goals and wasted a lot of set-pieces,'' said McGhee.

"You work all summer towards the first league game and this was not the script I anticipated.

"But it is only the first game and we have to put things right quickly at Barnet on Tuesday night.

"I'm still hoping to sign a striker before the transfer deadline and maybe a central defender as well.''
