Ex-Arsenal and Chelsea defender William Gallas is worried for his former teams, believing the title race could be fought out between Manchester City and Liverpool this season.

Prior to the international break, City and the Reds were the only sides heading into the September with a perfect record in the Premier League, with Arsenal dropping points against Brighton last time out by drawing 1-1. While it seems an absurd suggestion the Gunners are out of the title race, Liverpool supporters know all too well just how fine the margins are when going head to head with City.

Pep Guardiola's side has won the last four titles, and are seeking to make history this season by winning a fifth consecutive Premier League crown. Of the six the Spaniard has won at the Etihad, two of them, the 2018/19 and 2021/22 titles, came when City narrowly edged out Liverpool by a single point.

And Gallas believes that after having seen Liverpool and City in action this season, they could be the two sides set to compete for the Premier League this season. "I’m concerned that Liverpool and Manchester City could run away with it," Gallas told Gambling Zone.

"It’s so important to start the season with a winning run and look at the message Liverpool sent with a 3-0 win at Old Trafford. You need to have opponents scared before the game even starts and that is what Liverpool have done. It’s a strong message.

"Then if you look at Manchester City, the smaller teams really don’t want to play against them because you know what is going to happen. Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal are in the same bracket but I don’t think Arsenal have the strongest squad."

Liverpool.com says: "It should be remembered the Premier League is a marathon and not a sprint. Undoubtedly, there will be some bumps in the road for Arne Slot to deal with this term. That said, you would rather get off to a fast start than not, which Liverpool has done so far this season.

"If the Reds can make it four wins from four this weekend against Nottingham Forest, and Manchester City defeat Brentford to maintain their perfect start, it could heap huge pressure onto Arsenal in their derby clash with Spurs. Should the Gunners drop points to Spurs, they could find themselves five points off the pace in the Premier League, just a week before they have to take on City at the Etihad next Sunday."
