William Saliba wants to surpass the standards he set with Marseille last season upon his return to Arsenal, revealing how he has prepared.

Saliba is still awaiting a senior debut for Arsenal despite joining the club in 2019. Last season, he endured his third loan spell away from the club. During his year with Marseille, the defender established himself as one of France’s most promising.

He won the award for Ligue 1’s Young Player of the Year after making more than 50 appearances in all competitions. Since the campaign concluded, there has been much speculation about his future.

After such a productive season, Saliba will not want his development to slow down. But Arsenal could feel the time is right to reintegrate him, despite relying on Benjamin White and Gabriel Magalhaes last season.

For now, Saliba is training with Arsenal throughout pre-season. And judging by his comments, it seems he is focusing on making a significant impact at the Emirates Stadium when things get underway.

He told www.arsenal.com: “I had a good season last season. We [Marseille] finished second in the table and I had some good moments and learned a lot, and I hope this season will be better than that.

“I was very proud [to win the Young Player of the Year award] because the league has a lot of good young players, so it’s good for me but I want more.”

While he was impressing at Marseille, though, Saliba was keeping a close eye on developments at Arsenal. He hopes it will stand him in good stead for playing with new faces.

He revealed: “When I was on loan I watched every single [Arsenal] game because when I was there some players weren’t.

“I watched the games to see how they played, so when I was back it would be easier to play with those I hadn’t met before.

“It’s important that the fans are behind you, and I like it very much. I can’t wait to give back to them.”

William Saliba has spoken with Mikel Arteta

It will ultimately be up to Mikel Arteta how much Arsenal use Saliba if he stays. The defender has held conversations with his manager and is in little doubt about the plan ahead.

Saliba said: “We spoke a little bit on Monday and will speak more. My plan is to fight and work with the team, win as much as possible, and grow more.

“It feels good to be back and starting pre-season. I’m so excited to continue training and playing in the friendly games.

“It’s important to be here with the fans, as well as my teammates. I hope we’ll enjoy some good training and games which is important before the start of the season.”

Arsenal are currently in the United States for friendlies against Everton, Orlando City and Chelsea.
