Wakefield coach Willie Poching described his side’s 13-12 golden point defeat to St Helens as “gut-wrenching”, saying the dressing room is hurting.

Trinity suffered their fifth successive defeat on Sunday afternoon, with Jack Welsby’s drop goal in golden point pinching the win for Saints, who came from 12-0 down to win.

Wakefield sit rock bottom of the Super League table with seven games remaining. Toulouse, who lost to Salford on Saturday, sit just above them on points difference.

“The dressing room is hurting,” Poching said after their heartbreaking defeat to Saints.

“Saints are a quality team and we knew we had to play and defend like we did in order to get something out of the game.

“I thought we did enough but unfortunately it wasn’t to be. But I said to the lads we can be proud of a lot of things we did and I thought we took some good strides forward.

“We have got to understand we have got this in us and deliver on it. Even though Saints scored a couple of tries in the second half, I thought our defensive effort was still there.”

Willie Poching not a fan of golden point

Poching added that he has never liked the golden point ruling. He would much prefer to share a point if the game is all-square after 80 minutes.

“I have never been a fan (of golden point),” he said. “For the effort, a draw should be enough. But I understand people like car crash TV.”

Next up for Wakefield is a trip to neighbours Castleford in a West Yorkshire derby.

After that, Poching’s men have to play Catalans (H), Wigan (H), Hull (A), Hull KR (H), St Helens (A) and Huddersfield (A).
