British No1 Cameron Norrie hopes having his parents at Wimbledon will spur him on to greatness.

Norrie, 26, was born in South Africa to Welsh mother Helen and Scottish father David before being brought up in Auckland.

The couple were unable to see him play in SW19 last year because of Covid restrictions.

With his world ranking rising impressively over the past year, the world No 12 and ninth seed Norrie is confident of getting past the third round for the first time.

He believes he can emulate the success of Andy Murray, who ended Britain’s 77-year wait for a champion in 2013.

Norrie said: “Wimbledon is an unbelievable venue. My parents haven’t been over so much to watch. “Luckily enough, this year they’re in Europe and will be staying in London to watch me.

“My parents love tennis and want me to be happy and playing well. They’re going to enjoy it win or lose.

“It’s going to feel important and special having them around, that’s for sure, hanging out with them off the court as well.

“This is my job - so I will be going out to give the best performance I can. Every player I come up against will be good. I’m not going to let my guard down.”

Last October, Norrie celebrated winning the Indian Wells title by kissing girlfriend Louise Jacobi, 23, who will be cheering him on again.

He lost in straight sets to American Maxime Cressy in the quarter-finals at Eastbourne yesterday in his final match before Wimbledon.
