Wimbledon 2022 LIVE: Iga Swiatek in action after Matteo Berrettini ruled out of tournament with Covid

Follow all the action as Wimbledon continues with Rafael Nadal, Iga Swiatek and Serena Williams all in action on day two.

Today marks the return of Nadal, back for the first time since 2019 and fresh from opening up a lead in the race to finish with the most men’s grand slam titles with 22. That’s compared to defending champion Novak Djokovic, who has 20 titles, with the six-time champion up and running after swiftly moving into the second round with a hard-fought four-set win over Soonwoo Kwon. The other finalist from SW19 last year, Matteo Berrettini, is out of the tournament after testing positive for Covid.

The favourite in the women’s singles is World No 1 Iga Swiatek and she opens up her championships on Centre Court against Jana Fett, taking the traditional slot on the first Tuesday of play after defending women’s champion Ash Barty’s sudden retirement. There is more Wimbledon royalty in action on day two with Williams making her long-awaited return. The seven-time Wimbledon champion is back in singles action after cruelly being forced to retire from her first round match at SW19 last year and the 40-year-old, third up on Centre Court, looks to ignite her comeback from a hamstring injury when she takes on Harmony Tan.

Elsewhere there is intriguing matches involving Coco Gauff and Elena-Gabriela Ruse on Court Two, while the charismatic Nick Kyrgios is hoping to cement his status as a dark horse this year with a first-round encounter against Paul Jubb on Court Three. Follow all the action from day two live, including the latest results, reaction and analysis from the All England Club

Ymer replaces Berrettini

11:30 , Michael Jones

Matteo Berrettini’s withdrawal is a huge blow to the tournament but makes Rafael Nadal’s chances of winning much better.

Berrettini reached the final last year, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets, and looked to be in brilliant form in the build-up to Wimbledon beating Andy Murray to win the Stuttgart Open title.

He then retained his title at Queen’s a few weeks ago and would have arrived at Wimbledon having won 20 of his last 21 grass-court matches.

Berrettini was the third favourite to lift the Wimbledon trophy - after Djokovic and Nadal - and has officially been replaced in the draw by lucky loser Elias Ymer of Sweden.

Berrettini had been put Nadal’s half of the draw and was on a collision course with the Australian and French Open champion. Without Berrettini to face Nadal’s route to the final is slightly easier.

Matteo Berrettini, runner-up at SW19 last year and one of the favourites for the title, has had to withdraw from the Championships after testing positive for Covid-19.

In a post on Instagram he wrote: “I am heartbroken to announce that I need to withdraw from Wimbledon due to a positive COVID-19 test result.

“I have had flu symptoms and been isolating the last few days. Despite symptoms not being severe, I decided it was important to take another test this morning to protect the health and safety of my fellow competitors and everyone else involved in the tournament.

“I have no words to describe the extreme disappointed I feel. The dream is over for this year, but I will be back stronger. Thank you for the support.”

There’s a delay to proceedings on Court 18 as both players are worried about the underfoot conditions. The grass is a little damp and they’re asking the umpire whether it’s fit to start.

He says ‘we can leave it a few minutes before we start’.

By the looks of things though, they’re are about to warm up.

We’ll be following the action between Swan and Kostyuk with occasional updates from Peniston before the action on Centre Court begins.

Halep returns to Wimbledon

The 2019 Ladies Singles champion, Simona Halep, makes her long awaited return to Wimbledon against last year’s quarter-finalist Karolina Muchova.

This is Halep’s first return to SW19 since winning the 2019 title, having seen the 2020 edition cancelled due to Covid-19 and then missing last year through injury.

It is Wimbledon tradition for the defending women’s champion to open Centre Court action on the first Tuesday, something Halep was not able to do due to her absence last year.

But with 2021 champion Ash Barty now retired there was an opening, but tournament officials instead gave the slot to world number one Iga Swiatek.

“I’ve said this too much to say. But I can say that I feel sad that I missed it because I was injured, so I couldn’t really take the chance,” she said.

“It would have been very nice to open the tournament. But my chance is gone. So probably in this life I can have another chance, so I will look forward to that.

“Not that simple, but I’m going to work for that.”

Andy Murray uses underarm serve in first-round win at Wimbledon

Andy Murray threw in an underarm serve as he overcame a stiff examination of his form and fitness to get his Wimbledon campaign up and running.

The former world number one faced a race against time to recover from an abdominal strain he suffered a fortnight ago in time to play at SW19.

The injury did not seem to be an issue but the match sharpness probably was after Murray was broken twice on his way to dropping the first set against unseeded Australian James Duckworth.

Murray through to second round

Andy Murray made a brilliant return to Centre Court last night with a comeback victory over James Duckworth after losing the first set and the 35-year-old Scot relished the chance to play in front of a packed crowd at Wimbledon again.

“It is amazing to be back out here again with a full crowd,” said the two-time Wimbledon champion. “I’m getting on a bit now so I don’t know how many opportunities I will get here.

“I’m pleased I managed to get through and hopefully I will get another match here on Centre in a couple of days.”

Murray will now face big serving John Isner in the next round. Isner was famously part of tennis’ longest ever match when he took Nicholas Mahut to five sets at Wimbledon back in 2010 before eventually winning the final set 70-68 after 11 hours 5 minutes playtime over three days.

“I played well against John in the past. I don’t think I’ve ever played him on grass before, so there will be different challenges,” Murray said. “He’s played well here before. He was very close to making the final a few years ago.

“I’ll need to play really well and certainly return a bit better than I did tonight if I want to get through that.”

John McEnroe and Sue Barker criticised after paying tribute to Boris Becker at Wimbledon

John McEnroe and Sue Barker have been criticised for showing support to Boris Becker while on air at Wimbledon.

Three-time champion Becker was jailed for two-and-a-half years back in April after being found guilty of concealing £2.5million of assets to avoid paying money he owed after his bankruptcy.

The six-time grand slam winner has been a regular on the BBC’s coverage of the tournament for many years and was present alongside McEnroe and Barker last year.

“Boris, we love you. We miss you, man,” McEnroe said during Monday’s broadcast before Barker added: “We do indeed.”

Novak Djokovic overcomes Soonwoo Kwon test to begin Wimbledon defence

Back to Wimbledon but not exactly back to business for Novak Djokovic. There was a moment where it appeared the six-time Wimbledon champion had found an unlikely sanctuary after the events of the past 12 months but thanks to controlled aggression from the unheralded Soonwoo Kwon, Djokovic was faced with an afternoon that, like his year, was far from straightforward.

There was a storm brewing on Centre Court as Kwon served out the second set, and that wasn’t just overhead as the rain pittered on the closed roof to the sound of thunder above the All England Club. The 24-year-old troubled Djokovic at times with a big serve, patience in the lengthy exchanges and an exquisite touch at the net that really should have been utilised more often.

It gave Djokovic a brief scare but as Kwon’s accuracy waned the size of the task at hand for a player ranked 81 in the world became clear, as the top seed and favourite for the men’s title rattled out a 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4 win.

Centre Court Order of Play

10:30 , Michael Jones

There’s another top quality schedule for Centre Court today.

Fresh off her victory at the French Open, women’s world no. 1 Iga Swiatek gets her Wimbledon campaign underway against Croatia’s Jana Fett with this match kicking off Centre Court proceedings at 1:30pm.

Following Swiatek out on court is men’s no. 2 seed Rafael Nadal who is halfway to a calender grand slam having already triumphed at the Australian and French Opens. He faces Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina.

Finally, Serena Williams makes her return to the sport at 40-years-old and will take on France’s Harmony Tan. Williams was given a wildcard to play in the tournament and this match will give a clear indicator of whether she can still be a major force in women’s tennis. Don’t put it past her.
