Wimbledon 2024 LIVE! Holger Rune vs Novak Djokovic latest score and updates

Wimbledon 2024 LIVE!

Novak Djokovic is in fourth-round action on Centre Court at Wimbledon this evening as he battles Holger Rune for a place in the men’s quarter-finals. The seven-time champion has been in impressive form at SW19 so far this fortnight, but had to battle back from dropping the first set against Australia’s world No47 Alexei Popyrin on Saturday before eventually finding his groove and winning in four.

He also dropped a set against the plucky British No13 Jacob Fearnley last week following an opening thrashing of Vit Kopriva as he insisted he had no lingering concerns over a knee injury that forced his withdrawal from the French Open last month and required surgery. Djokovic could now face a tough test against Rune, the 15th seed and Danish firebrand who usually brings the excitement to the court.

Djokovic has won three of his previous five matches against the current so-called ‘bad boy’ of men’s tennis, but this is the first ever meeting between the duo on grass. Follow Rune vs Djokovic live below with Standard Sport’s Dom Smith at Wimbledon!

  • Day eight round-up so far

GAME, SET, MATCH DJOKOVIC — 6-3, 6-4, 6-2

21:17 , Dom Smith

Rune has Djokovic running all over the court, with the Serb 40-0 up, but the 24-time Grand Slam winner is there and able to tap into an empty court to finish off an excellent display and reach the quarter-finals.

End of the road for Rune, but a more-than gutsy performance by him.

Rune 3-6, 4-6, 2-5 Djokovic

21:12 , Dom Smith

More than a bit of trouble for Rune as he goes 0-30 down and Djokovic moves to within two points of the break, but the Dane responds by finding a lovely net winner for 15-30.

And then at 15-40 as Rune goes long, there is that chance.

And now Djokovic will get the chance to serve for the match, breaking Rune for a 5-2 third-set lead.

Rune 3-6, 4-6, 2-4 Djokovic

21:08 , Dom Smith

An ace on second serve brings up 30-15 for Djokovic on serve, who then slips twice mid-point, losing it for 30-30.

40-30.

And then another slip causes him to lose a point he would have won, with Rune taking the game to deuce.

Then break point!

But it’s saved and Djokovic maintains his composure to hold.

Rune 3-6, 4-6, 2-3 Djokovic

20:59 , Dom Smith

Hold to love for Rune as Djokovic angles into the tramlines. But he remains a break down...

Rune 3-6, 4-6, 1-3 Djokovic

20:55 , Dom Smith

Poor from Rune as he nets under no pressure for 15-0 Djokovic.

Absolutely FANTASTIC winner by Rune takes the roof off Centre Court as he sprints towards Djokovic’s return and then slaps it past the net and into the court. What a shot!

But Djokovic has been 30-30 on serve a million times and serves superbly, before advancing to the net for a volley putaway and a 40-30 lead.

Rune 3-6, 4-6, 1-2 Djokovic

20:50 , Dom Smith

Rune gets his serving in check for his second service game of the third set, taking it for 2-1 as the players take a seat before changing ends.

Rune 3-6, 4-6, 0-2 Djokovic

20:47 , Dom Smith

Inches beyond the baseline by the unfortunate Rune as Djokovic moves to 30-0. Then it’s 40-0 in the blink of an eye.

Djokovic then deals a double fault but challenges and is RIGHT AGAIN. If tennis is his calling, then challenging umpire’s calls is his second calling.

Then, humorously enough, there is a double fault.

But he holds.

Rune 3-6, 4-6, 0-1 Djokovic

20:42 , Dom Smith

Rune’s drop-shot fails to clear the tape at 0-30 and hands Djokovic three break points immediately in the third set.

He doesn’t take the first, instead backhand slicing long, yet Djokovic takes the second as Rune bravely approaches the net but then slices the ball into it.

Great start to the third set by Djokovic. A nightmare for his opponent.

Rune 3-6, 4-6 Djokovic

20:35 , Dom Smith

A little clench of the fists by Djokovic as he wins, with a drop-shot, a point that didn’t look to be heading his way.

Then Rune nets, bringing up 30-0 Djokovic.

But Djokovic then produces his first double fault of the match for 30-15, bringing his Danish opponent back into contention on his serve.

Then Djokovic slams long. 30-30.

And then cheers of “RUUUNNNE” around Centre Court as his thumping backhand forces Djokovic to net and brings up break point.

Saved. Stunning line winner by Djokovic brings up advantage at deuce, and he takes it. He takes the set too.

Rune 3-6, 4-5 Djokovic

20:27 , Dom Smith

Rune challenges the call as his shot drops wide but it’s a poor call and he’s 0-30 down. And as Djokovic smashes at the net, it’s 0-40 and three sets points.

The first is saved, so is second. Then a really underhit drop shot by Djokovic for deuce.

Then at advantage Djokovic, Rune’s powerful reply is too good for Djokovic, who ends up crouched on the turf in frustration.

Rune survives three set points to hold.

Rune 3-6, 3-5 Djokovic

20:18 , Dom Smith

At 30-0 up, Djokovic is handed a free point as a relatively weak serve is not returned over the net by Rune.

But a fine strike by Rune leads Djokovic to whack into the net himself.

Netted by Rune. Game Djokovic.

Rune 3-6, 3-4 Djokovic

20:13 , Dom Smith

Rune hammers a cross-court act past Djokovic’s outstretched racket for a 30-15 lead, and his big serving again causes problems for 40-15.

Rune nets, letting Djokovic back in with a glimpse. Then deuce. And then Rune overhits his shot, giving Djokovic a break point!

Rune thinks he’s saved it with an ace, but Djokovic challenges and is right!

Then Rune does save it. Then another break point following a very long rally...

Into the tramlines it goes from Rune, whose level is high but who has been broken.

Rune 3-6, 3-3 Djokovic

20:06 , Dom Smith

Rune goes long. 30-0. Djokovic ace. 40-0. Djokovic nets. 40-15. Djokovic nets. 40-30. Rune goes long. Game.

Rune 3-6, 3-2 Djokovic

20:02 , Dom Smith

Rune having greater success on serve at the minute, holding to love as Djokovic fires long twice in a row.

He then runs quickly for a loo break at the changeover.

Rune 3-6, 2-2 Djokovic

19:59 , Dom Smith

Rune somehow returns a stunning drop-shot by Djokovic, but the Serb duly thumps a winner past Rune and levels his service game at 15-15.

But Rune’s eye is in and he forces Djokovic to dart about the place and ultimately net. A bit of trouble for Djokovic on serve here.

Outrageous Djokovic drop-shot for parity — cool as you like.

Djokovic gets through the game. 2-2.

Rune 3-6, 2-1 Djokovic

19:53 , Dom Smith

Much better from Rune at the start of this set, as he moves 40-0 clear with outstanding serving.

The Norwegians hecklers certainly appear to be helping too.

Game Rune.

Rune 3-6, 1-1 Djokovic

19:50 , Dom Smith

Strange moment as Djokovic seems to question whether to go for Rune’s return and ultimately chooses not to, making it 15-30 Rune, but Djokovic then hits an ace.

Game Djokovic.

Rune 3-6, 1-0 Djokovic

19:47 , Dom Smith

Djokovic passes a cross-court forehand just long, moving Rune 40-15 ahead, and then he arrows the ball even further beyond the baseline, handing Rune a free service game to start off the second set.

Rune 3-6 Djokovic

19:43 , Dom Smith

Djokovic serves his way to the first set, firing an ace down the T to finish things off. How’s about that. What a start from the man supposedly injured and not likely to go all the way at SW19 this year!

Rune 3-5 Djokovic

19:39 , Dom Smith

Outstanding game by Rune, to keep him in the first set. An ace sees him 40-15 up; a forehand smash into the side of the court Djokovic isn’t gets him over the line.

Rune 2-5 Djokovic

19:35 , Dom Smith

Rune slaps a winner cross-court for 15-15, but Djokovic is back in business when the Dane then immediately nets.

Djokovic can sometimes just be a total joy to watch and the next point is one of those moments, the Serb cutting a fine shot so low over the net and onto the line — Rune only able to then net.

Rune long. Game.

Rune 2-4 Djokovic

19:31 , Dom Smith

Rune miscues into the tramlines to move Djokovic one point away from a break point at 15-30, but he responds with fine spirit by producing an ace.

Break point does arrive but Djokovic’s lob is just long and so it’s deuce.

“Don’t let him break”, someone cries to Rune, as if that will help him whatsoever in any real sense.

But what do I know? Rune does hold, under immense pressure.

Rune 1-4 Djokovic

19:26 , Dom Smith

Netted by Rune as Djokovic goes 15-0 ahead, and then a cat-and-mouse point which ends with the veteran passing coolly down the line and past Rune.

Then long from Djokovic, though. But he holds firm.

Rune 1-3 Djokovic

19:23 , Dom Smith

I almost feel a little sorry for Rune as a deafening cheer follows his ace for 15-0.

Another blistering ace brings up 40-15 for the Dane, and he then guides the ball into the corner beautifully to secure his first game of the match.

Rune 0-3 Djokovic

19:20 , Dom Smith

Rune playing very poorly at the moment, just not getting into the swing of things in almost any point.

Djokovic forces him to net to bring up 40-0, and the Serb then does so again. Hold.

Rune 0-2 Djokovic

19:18 , Dom Smith

Djokovic has come out so aggressively here, working to the net and thumping a forehand into the corner of the court for 0-30.

Then a fortunate moment as Rune’s second serve bounces just over the cord and in... but an immediate double fault. Three break points.

He’s broken. Djokovic wins it.

Rune 0-1 Djokovic

19:15 , Dom Smith

Djokovic gets us underway with a strong service game, not entertaining long rallies — not needing to.

Good start by the Serb.

Warm-up

19:12 , Dom Smith

The players are out now and warming up. Could be a cracker, this!

Minutes away

19:03 , Dom Smith

Djokovic and Rune are waiting indoors and expected to walk out on Centre Court any minute now...

Djokovic and Rune preview their clash

18:52 , Dom Smith

Rune is labelled the ‘bad boy of tennis’ by some, but Djokovic had nothing but positive things to say about the Dane ahead of this match.

“I get along very well with him,” he said. “He’s a very nice guy and I always try to be available to him for any practice or advice.”

Rune said: “I’m expecting a tough battle, that’s always how it’s going to be when you play Novak.”

GAME, SET, MATCH FRITZ!

18:48 , Dom Smith

That’s it. Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune are next up on Centre Court now, after Taylor Fritz comes from two sets down to beat fourth seed Alexander Zverev, 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 in a five-set thriller.

How about that for a warm-up act?!

Last time out

18:35 , Dom Smith

Djokovic reached the fourth round by beating Alexei Popyrin of Australia in four sets.

He had to come from behind too, and his opponent played some brave tennis.

You can recount his performance on Saturday night with Standard Sport’s match report here, from Centre Court.

Match delayed for a little while...

18:20 , Dom Smith

Taylor Fritz has forced a fifth set against Zverev on Centre Court, so Djokovic and Rune will have to wait a while.

It could be 7:15pm before we see them at this rate.

Day 8 round-up so far

18:07 , Dom Smith

Earlier on Monday, Jelena Ostapenko reached the quarter-finals with a straight-sets victory over Yulia Putintseva, while Elena Rybakina also reached the last eight as Anna Kalinskaya retired.

Ale de Minaur made his first Wimbledon quarter-final in front of girlfriend and British No1 Katie Boulter by beating Arthur Fils of France in four sets, and Jamie Murray — flanked by Taylor Townsend — reached the second round in the mixed doubles.

Head-to-head (H2H) record

17:54 , Dom Smith

This will be the sixth meeting between Djokovic and Rune, with Djokovic having won three of the previous five.

Interestingly, though, this will be their first-ever clash on grass. We know the Serb loves a grasscourt, but he still has heavy strapping on his leg after recent knee surgery. Could be a tight match.

Scheduled time

17:41

The match is due to start after the end of the fourth-round clash currently on Centre Court between Taylor Fritz and Alexander Zverev.

They are halfway through the fourth set right now. As it stands, Djokovic and Rune could be underway at around 6pm BST.

How to watch

17:33 , Dom Smith

The match will be broadcast live in the UK on BBC One or online via the BBC iPlayer app or website.
