Wimbledon 2022 LIVE: Jack Draper beaten by Alex De Minaur in thriller after Rafael Nadal and Coco Gauff wins

Day four of Wimbledon saw the return of Rafael Nadal and Iga Swiatek following the crushing losses to both home favourites on Wednesday when Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu suffered second-round exits on Centre Court.

Nadal overcame errors and a long rain delay to beat Ricardas Berankis and bolster his bid for a third crown at the All England Club. After a sloppy start Nadal produced at the important moments and came out to quickly break Berankis in the fourth as his opponent attempted to mount a comeback, on his way to a 6-4 6-4 3-6 6-3 win.

Swiatek’s struggles with grass seemed to continue, as the World No 1 needed three sets to defeat the lucky loser Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove on Court One. Swiatek had to dig deep at times to pull out a 6-4 4-6 6-3 victory, that extended her winning streak to 37 wins.

Meanwhile, British hopes at Wimbledon were revived by sensational performances from Katie Boulter and Liam Broady. First, Boulter fought from a set down to defeat former World No 1 Karolina Pliskova on Centre Court while Broady then beat Diego Schwartzman in five sets. It came after Heather Watson finished off Wang Qiang to reach the third round in a match that was interrupted from last night, but Alastair Gray, Harriet Dart and Jack Draper could not join them. Draper was beaten in a thrilling late-night battle by Alex De Minaur in the final match of the day.

Earlier, a stunning display from Nick Kyrgios fired the Australian to a straight sets win over Filip Krajinovic. Kyrgios was faultless in running away with the victory in 85 minutes and will face Stefanos Tsitsipas in round three after the number four seed beat Jordan Thompson in straight sets.

Jack Draper vows to return to Wimbledon ‘a different player’ after battling loss

Friday 1 July 2022 00:08 , Jamie Braidwood

Jack Draper vowed to come back stronger after seeing his Wimbledon run end in the second round with defeat by 19th seed Alex De Minaur.

“It was a high-level match,” said Draper. “I thought Alex played incredibly well. Definitely, definitely tough out there. I think I can take a lot of positives. There’s also a lot of things I need to improve and keep working, developing.

“In terms of my tennis, it’s obviously trying to hit my spots on my serve. I think my forehand needs a lot of work still. But I think the main thing is the physicality.

“Grand slam tennis is completely different. This is one of my first experiences. I’m here on merit in the main draw and also playing against a guy who is known for being unbelievably resilient. It’s a really good challenge for me.

“I think I do need these types of lessons to really grow. I think hopefully as I get more experiences like these, it’s going to help me in the future to push on in these types of tournaments.

“Next year I’ll be a different player again because physically I will have improved. Hopefully I will have stayed injury free. Obviously I’ve got a lot to work on. That’s not such a bad thing. It’s just going to take a bit of time.”

Rafael Nadal overcomes errors and Ricardas Berankis to reach Wimbledon third round

Thursday 30 June 2022 20:06 , Jack Rathborn

In the end both results counted the same, but while Novak Djokovic produced a near faultless display to advance on Wednesday, Rafael Nadal was more selective when finding his top form to defeat Ricardas Berankis on Centre Court and advance to the third round of WImbledon.

As the contenders from Nadal’s half of the draw fall, the comparison to Djokovic and the level that will almost certainly be required to capture the third leg of the calendar grand slam has been made clear. But, for a player whose year has been defined by rediscovering the peak of his powers, this was a far from vintage performance from the two-time Wimbledon champion.

A 6-4 6-4 4-6 6-3 slog against the World No 109 Berankis was for the most part defined by erratic hitting and unforced errors from the Spaniard. A two-set lead was established despite Nadal being far from his best, with the 36-year-old preventing what could have developed into an awkward evening by waking up on the big moments and the saving grace of Berankis struggling with the occasion.

Wimbledon: Rafael Nadal analyses Ricardas Berankis win

Thursday 30 June 2022 20:05 , Jack Rathborn

“It’s a chance to improve, I’m very happy with that. I need to improve,” said Nadal.

“The fourth set was much better, a goo dlevel of tennis, the serve worked better. I played a bit more aggressive on the forehand.

Too many mistakes at the beginning. It’s a process, it’s important to know it’s not perfect, be humble and accept the challenge. Think positive even when it’s not going the best way possible.”
