Claressa Shields vs Maricela Cornejo verdict
There's no escaping the fact that this fight will be one-way traffic. With the greatest of respect to Maricela Cornejo, who is by no means a pushover, we expect a complete precession in front of Shields' home crowd.
Cornejo took this fight at the 11th hour and has not been preparing to fight such an elite opponent like Shields. There has been no time to formulate a plan to identify a weakness if one even exists.
Instead, this should quickly descend into a survival exercise for Cornejo. The Washington native has never been knocked out in her career but there's a first time for everything.
Shields is such an overwhelming favourite that we're almost forced to consider the possibility of a knockout because no other market price has any meat to it.
Shields has recorded two knockout wins, but both of those came earlier in her professional career against weak opponents.
There's no doubt that Shields wins this match. Given her opponent was meant to be Hanna Gabriel, the only fighter to date to knock Shields down, we think the self-proclaimed GWOAT will have trained to do damage.
Gabriel would have been a much greater physical challenge and so we could see a more intense version of Shields here.
There's little value in coasting to a 10-round unanimous decision, begging the question will Shields start fast and see aim to see how quickly she can get her opponent out of there? We think so.
Given the lack of preparation time, a knockout here may be more likely than the odds suggest. Odds of close to 3/1 for Shields to finish the fight within the 10 rounds are worth a small wager.
