Winnipeg Jets reassign Ville Heinola to Finland, likely ending his 2019-20 NHL season

Sporting News

The Winnipeg Jets announced Friday that they have reassigned defenseman Ville Heinola to Liiga's Lukko Rauma (Finland).

Heinola, who went 20th overall to Winnipeg in the 2019 NHL draft, made the Jets opening night roster out of camp. Through eight games with Winnipeg, he notched a goal, five points and a plus/minus rating of plus-3 before being assigned to the team's AHL-affiliate Manitoba Moose on Oct. 31. In three games with the Moose, he registered one assist and a plus/minus rating of minus-2.

Players on entry-level deals, like Heinola, essentially get a nine-game tryout at the NHL level before the team must decide whether to reassign them to the AHL or Europe (unless selected from a CHL team, where they are required to return). With the 18-year-old being reassigned and loaned to Liiga, it delays the start of his ELC to the following season. While it is still possible the Jets bring him back, they'll burn out the first year of his deal if he plays two more games with the team.

According to CapFriendly, Heinola was set to make $1,137,500 this year, factoring in performance bonuses on top of his $925,000 cap hit.

The Finnish blueliner will return to his home country, playing in Rauma, which i an hour and a half from his hometown of Honkajoki. In 34 games last season for Lukko, Heinola recorded two goals and 14 points. He is now expected to play for Finland at the 2020 World Junior Championship that begins on Dec. 26.
