The Witcher season 2 spoilers follow.

The Witcher fans rejoice! A trailer for the upcoming Netflix season has officially arrived.

The eagerly-anticipated third instalment of the show, based on the video game and book series of the same name, will see Henry Cavill make his final outing as Geralt of Rivia, with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role.

After confirming the fantasy series' return date with a teaser trailer giving fans their first taste of what to expect, Netflix has dropped footage that shows Geralt going to battle once again to protect Ciri.

"For the first time, I understand real fear," Geralt admits in the clip.

Writing on their official Twitter page yesterday, the streaming giant shared posters for the show including Geralt, Ciri (Freya Allan), Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and Jaskier (Joey Batey), captioned: "They have the power to change it all. The Witcher Season 3 trailer tomorrow."

Last season left off with Ciri banishing the spirit of Voleth Meir that possessed her, with Yennefer betraying Geralt by sacrificing herself to save Ciri after the former Princess of Cintra slaughtered many of Geralt's fellow Witchers.

And it seems the latest series will see even more monsters and magic, with the official synopsis of the third season reading: "As monarchs, mages and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it.

"Entrusted with Ciri's magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl's untapped powers; instead, they discover they've landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever."

The series will be split into two parts, with volume one arriving on Netflix on June 29, 2023, and volume two following on July 27, 2023.

Creators behind the scenes of the show have recently opened up on the future of The Witcher, with a fifth series seemingly in the pipeline.

Speaking to Deadline, casting director Sophie Holland said: "We're just about to start filming on season four with Liam Hemsworth and there will be a short gap, then we go straight into season five."

Details of the fourth and fifth season are being kept tightly under wraps, so fans will just have to wait to see how The Hunger Games star Hemsworth fares as the show's new leading man.

The Witcher seasons 1-2 are now streaming on Netflix. Season 3 is in production. Spin-off The Witcher: Blood Origin is also streaming on Netflix.
