Wolves will reportedly get ahead of Tottenham in the race to sign Joao Palhinha by formalising details of a bid for the Sporting midfielder.
Palhinha has been a stand-out player in Sporting’s team this season. He has amassed a total of 38 appearances with six coming in the Champions League. The midfielder has been linked with a move to many of England’s top-flight teams this summer.
The 26-year-old has even reportedly stated himself that he would prefer a Premier League move.
The Portugal international has scored three goals this year but garnered no assists. Though, this isn’t that surprising as he is often used as a defensive midfielder.
According to a report from Portuguese outlet A Bola, the transfer saga for Palhinha is finally set to advance, with Wolves approaching the players’ representatives.
They have done this to see how much will be needed to make a transfer happen. Sporting reportedly want €25million (£21million) but it remains unclear what Wolves plan to offer.
The report states that Wolves’ meeting with the 26-year-old’s representatives is the ‘last step’ needed to make a bid happen.
As well as this, the report also claims that Wolves are waiting until players leave the club to go ahead with a deal.
However, it now looks like they are ready to advance without the transfer of players away from the club, so the report says.
The report also outlines that Tottenham ‘collected information’ on Palhinha. However, Wolves always had the most interest in Palhinha.
Why Wolves want Joao Palhinha
Wolves need to add depth to their midfield ranks this summer. Veteran midfielder Joao Moutinho’s contract expires this June and it looks as if an extension won’t be offered.
The report claims that Palhinha is a previous target of Wolves boss Bruno Lage’s from previous clubs.
Palhinha has proven himself in the Portuguese league this season and there have been plenty of impressive Premier League players to have made the switch from the country.
Liverpool’s Luis Diaz is the latest and he has hit the ground running at Anfield.
Wolves had hopes of qualifying for Europe earlier this season, which subsequently faded out. However, Lage will need reinforcements like Palhinha if he is to reinvigorate his team ahead of next season.
