Wolves boss Bruno Lage is hoping to sign not one Sporting midfielder this summer, but two, with Matheus Nunes a target for the Portuguese boss.

Wolves are believed to have an agreement in principle to pay Sporting £17m for Sporting star Joao Palhinha this summer.

A Bola have claimed that Wolves have met with the 26-year-old’s representatives is the ‘last step’ needed to hammer out a deal. However, they are yet to get a deal over the line, perhaps because Ruben Neves has not moved on yet.

Neves has been a brilliant servant to Wolves but the classy midfielder looks bound for bigger things.

His departure alongside that of Joao Moutinho will leave a hole in Lage’s midfield. And the Wolves boss wants two Portuguese stars to replace the outgoing pair.

According to newspaper Correio da Manhã, via Sport Witness, Lage “insists” on having Palhinha’s midfield partner Matheus Nunes arrive with him at Molineux.

Wolves are said to be primed with an offer of €40m to land Nunes, who made 50 appearances for Sporting last season.

Sporting value the 23-year-old highly though and will insist on a bigger fee. But, per the source, the player is open to a move to Wolves, believing they are the “ideal club” in the “most competitive league on the planet”.

Correio da Manhã believe that Wolves are ‘very close’ to landing Palhinha with his Sporting exit almost assured. And now the younger Nunes is ‘likely’ to follow him to the club.

If the reports are to be believed, Lage will be pretty happy with himself if he can get the Portugal pair on board.

Lage usually deploys a three at the back system with two defensive-minded midfielders.

The spine of the team is usually Moutinho and Neves and while it will come as a blow losing their experience, Palhinha and Nunes represent two quality replacements. And Nunes is a prospect that could well develop into a huge asset.
