Wolves are ready to hold talks over the signing of Brazil striker Gabriel Barbosa, as well as another South American addition, according to a report.

Barbosa has revived his career since returning to Brazil in 2018 after a doomed spell at Inter Milan. A loan spell with Santos got him back on track before he joined Flamengo in 2019. Since then, he has won nine trophies, scoring 101 goals along the way from just 155 games.

It means he has earned back his Gabigol nickname after previously flopping in Italy, where he scored just once in 10 Inter appearances.

There has been talk for a while that Barbosa could get another chance in European football. In fact, he could land in the Premier League, where he has a number of suitors.

According to 90min, Wolves have touched base with his entourage. Now, they are ready to take things further by sending chief scout Matthew Hobbs to South America in order to discuss a deal.

Wolves will hope their action can help them beat a range of rival suitors for Barbosa’s signature. He is also on the radars of Aston Villa and Newcastle, as well as Turkish side Fenerbahce.

But Hobbs will try to secure a deal for Wolves to win the race to sign him – just as he is aiming to do so for Enzo Fernandez.

Indeed, the report claims he will also visit Argentina to explore a deal for the River Plate midfielder. Like with Barbosa, Wolves have contacted Fernandez’s representatives and are now making further progress.

In that particular transfer battle, they are hoping to beat Benfica to his signature. There have also been links with heavyweights like Manchester United and Barcelona.

Fernandez is only 21 years old, but has 49 River Plate appearances to his name. It was recently revealed by Jornal de Noticias that Wolves would be travelling to Argentina to orchestrate a deal.

According to 90min‘s information, it could well turn out to be a two-pronged trip. They are hoping to return with deals for Barbosa and Fernandez, for a combined figure below £50m.

Gabriel Barbosa and Enzo Fernandez could herald new Wolves era

If both players can translate their talents to the Premier League, they could be long-term successors to two standout Wolves performers of recent years. Barbosa could take over from the fading Raul Jimenez, while Fernandez could replace the exit-linked Ruben Neves.

There are elements of risk with both deals. Barbosa’s previous European stint was not successful, although it looks like he has emphatically put that behind him.

As for Fernandez, a lack of experience could be a concern. But he is clearly well thought of by several top teams. As such, he would be an exciting prospect to develop.

Wolves have had a good eye for talent in recent years, so Barbosa and Fernandez could be the next to follow.
