Wolves miss chance to leapfrog Arsenal as obdurate Burnley scrap for yet another draw

Adama Traore was in enigmatic form as Wolves' hopes of leapfrogging Arsenal into fifth place were thwarted by a typically resolute Burnley defensive display.

The Spanish international caused Burnley problems with his pace and power but, as is so often the case, his end product was lacking as Wolves were held to a second successive goal-less stalemate.

The point keep them sixth and, although manager Bruno Lage was frustrated by the result, he refused to criticise Traore.

"I'm happy with Adama, he created chances for the team, he helped the team and did very well," he said. "I'm disappointed with the result, I felt we were the better side and deserved at least one goal. We created chances but didn't finish them off."

While Wolves are rock solid at the back, their problem is at the other end. This was the third time in four games they have failed to score and they have managed only 12 goals in 14 games, a record which, if it continues, will seriously undermine their hopes of remaining in the top six with in-form Liverpool next up at Molineux on Saturday.

Burnley are becoming draw specialists - this was their sixth in their last eight Premier League games - but Sean Dyche was happy with the battling point, even though they remain in the bottom three.

"It was a tight game," he said. "I thought our defensive structure was excellent - Charlie Taylor was outstanding - and we're pleased with the clean sheet but offensively we were not as dangerous as we have been recently. But Wolves are a good side and if you can't win you take a draw."

Traore had Wolves fans groaning when, after bursting clean through on a counter-attack mid-way through the first half, he decided to go it alone instead of feeding Raul Jimenez - which looked the better option - and although his shot was powerful and beat Nick Pope, it struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced to safety.

On two other occasions in the first half Traore found in himself in dangerous positions. On the first, his pass was a poor one and went behind Nelson Semedo and, on the second, a shot looked to be on but he passed to Jimenez who was crowded out.

His rollercoaster night continued in the second half when he mis-kicked when presented with a clear chance from 12 yards out. And then, after a scintillating run that left four Burnley defenders in his wake, he elected to cross when he should have had a shot.

When Traore finally got a shot on target, late in the game, Nick Pope produced a fine save to tip the effort round the post. Pope had earlier produced fine saves from Hee Chan Hwang - one in each half.

Referee John Brooks - officiating at his first Premier League fixture - was lenient on the two occasions that Wolves players lashed out at opponents. He only booked Hwang for throwing his arm at Matt Lowton in the first half. And Raul Jimenez escaped any punishment for a similar incident with Nathan Collins in the second half.

Brooks also had to stop the game for a few moments in the first half when the ball flew into the face of a woman fan who needed medical treatment for a bloodied nose.
