Wolves vs Tottenham - LIVE!

Nuno Espirito Santo made it a second successful return to old stomping ground Molineux in a matter of weeks on Wednesday night.

His Spurs side successfully booked their place in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, where they will face a trip to Burnley in October.

However, it was far from plain sailing for Tottenham, who led 2-0 inside 25 minutes in the West Midlands thanks to goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Kane, who ended his domestic duck in 2021/22.

Wolves came roaring back through Leander Dendoncker and Daniel Podence, forcing a penalty shootout.

Ruben Neves, Dendoncker and Conor Coady all missed from the spot for the hosts, with Bryan Gil importantly burying his own effort as Tottenham bounced back from successive 3-0 defeats against Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

Wolves’ terrible home form during the early stages of Bruno Lage’s reign continues.

In the end, relief for Nuno and Tottenham, who will progress to the EFL Cup fourth-round, but they didn’t make it easy on themselves.

At 2-0 up, they were cruising but Wolves looked the more likely winners in the second half.

The positives: a goal for Kane, a Dele assist and 90 minutes plus some magic from Ndombele.

The negatives: Ndombele’s weakness for both Wolves goals, conceding from another set piece and an apparent mental fragility at 2-0.

Defiant Nuno insists Tottenham will improve

Nuno was in defiant mood on the eve of his latest return to Molineux, insisting things would improve at Tottenham after those successive 3-0 losses and admitting that fans deserved much better than that second-half collapse against Chelsea.

“We started the season with a lot of [difficult] situations and we built a way,” Nuno said.

“We built how we wanted to do things and we did quite well in the first matches of the season. I recall the atmosphere was huge.

“Of course when things happen and we have problems and results don’t appear and performances don’t appear, the momentum goes.

“The good feeling goes away but this is what we have to realise and we have to find a way to go back again.

“Our fans deserve much, much better than what we did on Sunday. I was really pleased and I think our fans were as well with the first half – there were a lot of positives – but the second half was not good.

“So we lost that chance to recover the good feeling among us, but what I can tell and my message is clear: we are working hard, we are working very hard and the players are committed to it.

“We are positive. It’s about trying to build during the competition, we don’t have too much time on the training ground. It’s during the matches.

“The players are committed. Things are going to gel and we are going to play better and things are going to improve because this is what we realise.

“Our reaction to our problems is hard work, it’s helping each other. It’s how I work, with everybody involved. This is the right path for us.”

Nuno is expected to make changes for tonight’s match after back-to-back 3-0 defeats in the Premier League.

The Spurs manager will still be without Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn but Japhet Tanganga is available again after suspension and could come in at right-back or centre-half.

Davinson Sanchez could also return to the side, with Cristian Romero and Eric Dier likely to be saved for the visit to Arsenal on Sunday after starting the defeat to Chelsea despite limited time on the training pitch last week.

Spurs are short of options in forward areas but Bryan Gil is likely to be handed another start, while Tanguy Ndombele or Giovani Lo Celso could play in midfield as they continue to work towards full fitness.

Harry Kane is yet to score this season but, in the absence of Lucas and Bergwijn, can expect to lead the line again.

Pierluigi Gollini, who has started in goal in Europe, could replace Hugo Lloris between the sticks.

“We cannot play the game on Sunday on the Wednesday,” Nuno said.

“We play on Wednesday so let’s focus on the game of tomorrow. That’s the only focus we have. Regarding team news nothing has changed much. We still have players out.

“Some players with some issues from the previous game which we are trying to manage, but nothing has changed much.”
