Wolves 2-2 Tottenham LIVE! Spurs win penalty shootout - Carabao Cup result, match stream and latest updates today

Wolves vs Tottenham - LIVE!

Nuno Espirito Santo made it a second successful return to old stomping ground Molineux in a matter of weeks on Wednesday night.

His Spurs side successfully booked their place in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, where they will face a trip to Burnley in October.

However, it was far from plain sailing for Tottenham, who led 2-0 inside 25 minutes in the West Midlands thanks to goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Kane, who ended his domestic duck in 2021/22.

Wolves came roaring back through Leander Dendoncker and Daniel Podence, forcing a penalty shootout.

Ruben Neves, Dendoncker and Conor Coady all missed from the spot for the hosts, with Bryan Gil importantly burying his own effort as Tottenham bounced back from successive 3-0 defeats against Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

Wolves’ terrible home form during the early stages of Bruno Lage’s reign continues.

Nuno asked about Wolves and whether he recognised anything about his former club, good or bad, today.

He says: “Wolves are a very good team, you know the quality and talent they have. It’s a very tough atmosphere of Molineux, it helps them a lot.”

22:13 , Dan Kilpatrick

Nuno asked about Kane but again suggests he doesn’t want to talk about individuals.

Goes as far as to say: “Harry had a very good game but it’s about the team improving and growing together.”

22:12 , Dan Kilpatrick

Nuno asked about the performance of Tanguy Ndombele, who opened the scoring but was at fault for both Wolves’s goals.

He said he does not want to talk about individuals but does add: “Let’s be patient with Tanguy. It’s his third game.”

Nuno is here...

22:10 , Dan Kilpatrick

Nuno: “We allowed Wolves to get back in the game...

“I’m really disappointed with the set piece [for Wolves’ first goal]. The atmosphere changed with the second half.

“The first half was really, really good.”

22:06 , Dan Kilpatrick

Now we await the managers...

I daresay Nuno will be pleased with the overall result but it wasn’t exactly the huge morale booster ahead of Arsenal that it looked like being at 2-0...

22:01 , Dan Kilpatrick

Annnnnd breathe...

In the end, relief for Nuno and Tottenham, who will progress to the EFL Cup fourth-round, but they didn’t make it easy on themselves.

At 2-0 up, they were cruising but Wolves looked the more likely winners in the second half.

The positives: a goal for Kane, a Dele assist and 90 minutes plus some magic from Ndombele.

The negatives: Ndombele’s weakness for both Wolves goals, conceding from another set piece and an apparent mental fragility at 2-0.

MISS | Coady - Spurs win shootout 3-2!

21:53 , Dan Kilpatrick

Coady spanks his effort against the crossbar and Spurs are into the fourth-round.

MISS | Hojbjerg - 2-3

21:52 , Dan Kilpatrick

Lifeline for Wolves as Hojbjerg fires way too close to Ruddy.

MISS | Dendoncker - 2-3

21:51 , Dan Kilpatrick

Gollini saves! Hojbjerg can win it for Spurs!

GOAL | Gil - 2-3

21:50 , Dan Kilpatrick

Great penalty from the young Spaniard who fires into the top corner.

MISS | Neves - 2-2

21:50 , Dan Kilpatrick

Big moment.

Neves fires high over the bar.

GOAL | Reguilon - 2-2

21:49 , Dan Kilpatrick

Apologies, my wifi went down. But I can tell you that’s it’s 2-2 on penalties, Reguilon finding the top corner after Hwang, Kane and Moutinho all scored.

Full time | Wolves 2-2 Tottenham

21:42 , Dan Kilpatrick

Peeep peeep peeeeeeeep!

Penalties will decide this EFL Cup third-round after an entertaining draw at Molineux.

Substitution | Tottenham

21:41 , Dan Kilpatrick

Reguilon for Tanganga. Nuno eating up time or thinking of penalties?

Reguilon for Tanganga. Nuno eating up time or thinking of penalties?

90 + 1 minutes

21:35 , Dan Kilpatrick

Danger for Tottenham as Ruben Neves lines up a 30-yard free-kick in the first of six minutes of stoppage time.

His effort takes a deflection off the wall and flies just over the bar. Spurs clear the resulting corner but it’s nervy for the visitors.

89 minutes

21:33 , Dan Kilpatrick

Oooooo, so nearly a winner for Wolves!

Ruben Neves is urged to shoot from 25 yards by the home crowd and he does, letting fly with an effort that deflects off Ndombele’s leg and onto the the top of the crossbar.

82 minutes

21:28 , Dan Kilpatrick

Ndombele goes into the book for a robust challenge through the back of Dendoncker.

Substitution | Spurs

21:27 , Dan Kilpatrick

Spurs make their second change of the night as Hojbjerg replaces Dele.

21:22 , Dan Kilpatrick

I’m surprised Ndombele is still on the pitch here as we enter the final 15 minutes.

Despite being at fault for both Wolves goals, I still think Spurs need him against Arsenal on Sunday.

But it’s hard to imagine him starting a fourth game in 10 days if he goes the distance tonight.

Substitution | Wolves - 74'

21:19 , Dan Kilpatrick

After a long stoppage, the hosts are forced into their third and final change.

Rayan Ait-Nouri cannot continue after running into Japhet Tanganga and Nelson Semedo is on.

66 minutes

21:13 , Dan Kilpatrick

What a save! Spurs so nearly back in front!

Son cuts inside on his right foot and whips in a cross for Harry Kane.

The England captain gets a firm head on the ball but Ruddy somehow keeps it out with a strong arm from close range.

Substitution | Tottenham

21:11 , Dan Kilpatrick

Spurs have sent on Heung-min Son.

Lo Celso, who has been effective, is the man replaced.

GOAL! Wolves 2-2 Tottenham | Podence - 59'

21:05 , Dan Kilpatrick

Wolves are level and it’s another awful moment for Tanguy Ndombele.

The midfielder, who opened the scoring but was weak for Wolves’ first goal, was pickpocketed in midfield while dawdling on the ball.

Dendoncker ran forward and Romero failed to cut out his pass, leaving Podence to curl into the far corner.

53 minutes

20:59 , Dan Kilpatrick

Spurs and Ndombele so close to another goal!

Ndombele plays a quick one-two with Skipp and lets fly hopefully from 25 yards.

The ball bounces awkwardly in front of Ruddy and the goalkeeper spills it out for a corner. That could have gone anywhere.

20:57 , Dan Kilpatrick

Adama has really given Wolves a lift and Spurs are resorting to a series of desperate slide tackles to stop the Spaniard.

46 minutes

20:52 , Dan Kilpatrick

Huge chance for Wolves right at the start of the second half.

Sanchez makes a mess of trying to muscle out Hoever and the right back is able to run clear and cross for Hwang.

The South Korean blazes his shot over the bar at the near post and in the process is clattered by two Spurs defenders, prompting Wolves protests.

Substitution | Wolves - 46'

20:50 , Dan Kilpatrick

The players are back out ahead of the second half.

Wolves have introduced Adama Traore at the interval. He’s gone over to the right wing.

Pray for Ben Davies.

Half time | Wolves 1-2 Tottenham

20:35 , Dan Kilpatrick

Peeep peeep!

Spurs go in ahead at the interval but Nuno will be mighty frustrated to have conceded (again) from a set piece.

His side raced ahead through Ndombele and Kane, and have played some really nice football.

But Dondoncker’s header pegged them back and it’s the hosts who finished the half the stronger.

45 + 1 minutes

20:32 , Dan Kilpatrick

Another decent chance for Wolves.

Spurs fail to clear another corner and the ball is whipped back in to Hwang, who stoops but can’t keep his header down.

It will be Spurs most pleased to regroup at half-time, which would have been surprising 15 minutes ago.

42 minutes

20:29 , Dan Kilpatrick

Wolves have their tails up and the crowd behind them. Bruno Lage’s side clearly fancy an equaliser before half-time.

Aït-Nouri has a go from outside the box but his low shot is easy for Gollini.

But Spurs break quickly and Tanganga ends up with his head in his hands after blazing over from an angle.

GOAL! Wolves 1-2 Tottenham | Dendoncker 37'

20:25 , Dan Kilpatrick

Wolves are back in this – and it’s another goal conceded from a set piece for Spurs.

Romero is forced to give away a corner and it’s whipped towards the back post by Aït-Nouri.

Ndombele flails a rather pathetic leg towards the ball but it’s Dendoncker who gets a firm head on it to power past Gollini. Game on.

20:20 , Dan Kilpatrick

Spurs are still probing for a third, and Skipp nearly releases Kane with a cute pass that’s intercepted.

Wolves are really struggling to gain a foothold and look a bit stunned by Spurs’ quick-fire double.

20:15 , Dan Kilpatrick

Chances galore now!

First, Dele nearly makes it 3-0 but can’t quite poke home following some nifty footwork and good wing-play from Gil.

Wolves go straight down the other end and win a corner, from which Coady plants a firm header straight at Gollini.

Then Spurs break again and it’s Lo Celso’s turn to stumble over his feet after getting free in the box.

Frantic stuff, I can’t keep up.

GOAL! Wolves 0-2 Tottenham | Harry Kane - 23’

20:10 , Dan Kilpatrick

You never doubted him, did you?

Harry Kane opens his domestic account for the season with Tottenham’s second.

Dele Alli picks out the forward with an excellent through pass and Kane takes it in his stride and bears down on John Ruddy’s goal.

As the goalkeeper advances, he plants a firm finish into the far corner. Spurs cruising.

20:05 , Dan Kilpatrick

It’s a big night for Bryan Gil and he’s causing Wolves plenty of problems down the left flank.

The young winger clear loves getting to the byline and crossing, which you expect Harry Kane will appreciate.

Booking | Silva - 16’

20:02 , Dan Kilpatrick

The winger goes into the book for a robust challenge on Tanganga, who stays down initially but is quickly back on his feet.

GOAL! Wolves 0-1 Tottenham | Tanguy Ndombele 14’

20:01 , Dan Kilpatrick

Spurs lead and it’s a super goal from the maverick Frenchman.

Oliver Skipp sells him a little short with a pass but Ndombele shows great determination to charge down Conor Coady’s clearance and surge into the box with the ball.

You think he’ll shoot on his left foot but instead he neatly turns inside Willy Boly and rolls home with his right.

I smell redemption in the air.

Substitution | Wolves - 8 minutes

19:54 , Dan Kilpatrick

An early blow for Wolves after just a few minutes.

Yerson Mosquera pulled up off the ball – it looked like a possible hamstring problem to me – and cannot continue.

The young defender is replaced by Conor Coady.

What a shame for the 20-year-old – and on his debut, too.

5 minutes

19:51 , Dan Kilpatrick

The hosts are still on top and easily get behind Spurs’ down the right channel.

The cut-back finds Dendoncker and his curling shot from 20 yards is well blocked by the head of Romero.

3 minutes

19:49 , Dan Kilpatrick

Wolves have made the better start here.

Gollini had to be quick off his line to intercept a through ball and now Wolves have a dangerous freekick on the right touchline after Sanchez fouled Silva... It’s wasted and Spurs clear.

19:45 , Dan Kilpatrick

There’s a minute’s applause for Jimmy Greaves pre-match and the players take the knee – to more warm applause – then we’re off!

19:43 , Dan Kilpatrick

Teams out at Molineux.

The home supporters roar out ‘Hi Ho Wolver-hampton’ (to the backing of ‘Hi Ho Silver Lining’, obviously), which I have to say is very, very good.

19:40 , Dan Kilpatrick

Wolves announce the impending start of ‘one of our popular light shows’ over the tannoy and I’m psyched.

After a too-long build up, it’s pretty good. There are flames and sparks and some flashing floodlights.

Let’s hope for more fireworks on the pitch etc etc.

19:32 , Dan Kilpatrick

Spurs finish off their warm-up with a haphazard shooting drill before heading back in.

Captain Hugo Lloris has been left out of the squad entirely tonight, so it was Pierluigi Gollini and youngster Brandon Austin facing the shots.

Austin, 22, would make his professional debut for Spurs if called upon tonight.

19:26 , Dan Kilpatrick

Nuno yesterday admitted Spurs have ‘many problems’ but, IMHO, their kit isn’t one.

Spurs are wearing their digi-print purple and green third shirt tonight, complete with purple shorts and socks.

It’s jazzy and not to everyone’s tastes – but I’m a fan!

19:17 , Dan Kilpatrick

As for Wolves, Japhet Tanganga will be relieved to see Adama Traore only among the subs after the pasting the winger gave him in Spurs’ 1-0 win here last month.

Hwang Hee-chan does start for the hosts and with Heung-min Son on the Spurs bench, you imagine this game will be attracting a huge audience in South Korea.

19:14 , Dan Kilpatrick

Despite six changes from the side that lost 3-0 to Chelsea, that’s still a relatively strong Spurs XI, including a third consecutive start for Tanguy Ndombele.

The Frenchman looked knackered in the second half on Sunday so you wonder if he will be able to start for a fourth time in 10 days at Arsenal this weekend.

Defiant Nuno insists Tottenham will improve

18:22 , George Flood

Nuno was in defiant mood on the eve of his latest return to Molineux, insisting things would improve at Tottenham after those successive 3-0 losses and admitting that fans deserved much better than that second-half collapse against Chelsea.

“We started the season with a lot of [difficult] situations and we built a way,” Nuno said.

“We built how we wanted to do things and we did quite well in the first matches of the season. I recall the atmosphere was huge.

“Of course when things happen and we have problems and results don’t appear and performances don’t appear, the momentum goes.

“The good feeling goes away but this is what we have to realise and we have to find a way to go back again.

“Our fans deserve much, much better than what we did on Sunday. I was really pleased and I think our fans were as well with the first half – there were a lot of positives – but the second half was not good.

“So we lost that chance to recover the good feeling among us, but what I can tell and my message is clear: we are working hard, we are working very hard and the players are committed to it.

“We are positive. It’s about trying to build during the competition, we don’t have too much time on the training ground. It’s during the matches.

“The players are committed. Things are going to gel and we are going to play better and things are going to improve because this is what we realise.

“Our reaction to our problems is hard work, it’s helping each other. It’s how I work, with everybody involved. This is the right path for us.”

Standard Sport prediction

17:58 , George Flood

There seems unlikely to be much between these teams but Nuno ought to take this competition particularly seriously, given the significance silverware of any kind would have in his first season in charge in north London.

Tottenham to win on penalties.

Tottenham team news

17:53 , George Flood

Nuno is expected to make changes for tonight’s match after back-to-back 3-0 defeats in the Premier League.

The Spurs manager will still be without Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn but Japhet Tanganga is available again after suspension and could come in at right-back or centre-half.

Davinson Sanchez could also return to the side, with Cristian Romero and Eric Dier likely to be saved for the visit to Arsenal on Sunday after starting the defeat to Chelsea despite limited time on the training pitch last week.

Spurs are short of options in forward areas but Bryan Gil is likely to be handed another start, while Tanguy Ndombele or Giovani Lo Celso could play in midfield as they continue to work towards full fitness.

Harry Kane is yet to score this season but, in the absence of Lucas and Bergwijn, can expect to lead the line again.

Pierluigi Gollini, who has started in goal in Europe, could replace Hugo Lloris between the sticks.

“We cannot play the game on Sunday on the Wednesday,” Nuno said.

“We play on Wednesday so let’s focus on the game of tomorrow. That’s the only focus we have. Regarding team news nothing has changed much. We still have players out.

“Some players with some issues from the previous game which we are trying to manage, but nothing has changed much.”

Spurs predicted XI (probable 4-3-3): Gollini; Doherty, Sanchez, Tanganga, Reguilon; Hojbjerg, Skipp, Lo Celso; Gil, Son, Kane.
