The 2022 summer transfer window was a hectic one, to say the least with the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle all spending large sums on players.

We’ve gone back and checked out the signings everyone was raving about at the time and seen how they have done since.

Last summer, Sky Sports News viewers voted for their best signings of the season and it was compiled into a starting XI. You won’t believe some of the players who made it in. This has not aged well.

GK: Bernd Leno

To be fair, we start off with what’s turned out to be a decent shout. While the German shot-stopper lost his way at Arsenal towards the end, he’s done well to build himself back up again at Fulham.

He boasts the highest save percentage in the league at 77.5% and has made the second-most amount saves this season with 132. All in all, an excellent bit of business from Fulham.

RB: Djed Spence

This is where things start to go downhill. Spence was coming off the back of an excellent loan spell last year where he played an instrumental role in Nottingham Forest’s promotion.

The young wing-back seemed like a perfect fit into Antonio Conte’s system from the outside, but it didn’t transpire that way in the end. After making a handful of cameo appearances he was shipped off to Rennes on loan in January.

To be fair, he looks like he’s enjoying life in France right now.

CB: Sven Botman

Now this was a proper signing. The Dutch defender has been worth every penny for Eddie Howe’s side who now boast the best defensive record in the league.

Botman has taken to the Premier League with ease and at just 23 years old, he is only going to get better. Newcastle have spent their money wisely since the takeover and this deal has been one of their best so far.

CB: Kalidou Koulibaly

Fans and pundits alike held the former Napoli defender in very high regard before a ball was kicked this season. Considered one of the best defenders in Europe, this seemed like a no brainier at the time.

The chaos at Chelsea this year hasn’t helped any of the players, but Koulibaly is yet to deliver considering what was first expected of him.

LB: Ivan Perisic

Given the 34-year-old signed on a free transfer, we can’t have many complaints about this one. Perisic has provided eight assists this year, the most of any Tottenham player.

His finest moment in a Spurs shirt probably came at Anfield when he managed to fold Virgil van Dijk in half like a deck chair.

CM: Philippe Coutinho

Aston Villa have gone from strength to strength under Unai Emery, but Coutinho has somewhat been left lagging behind. Injuries have hampered his game time and he has struggled to find much consistency this year.

The 30-year-old lit things up at Villa Park while on loan, but he hasn’t had the same impact since signing on a permanent basis. All in all, the Brazilian only has one goal to show for this campaign so far.

CM: Yves Bissouma

This seemed like the perfect signing at the time. A well-rounded dynamic midfielder like Bissouma was just what Spurs were crying out for. The £30million they spent at the time even seemed like great business.

In truth, this deal just hasn’t worked out. The 26-year-old has only started in eight league matches and has struggled to impact things while in North London. Maybe next year we’ll see a bit more from him in a Spurs shirt.

CM: Christian Eriksen

Prior to his ankle injury, Eriksen was one of the best midfielders in the league this season. The 31-year-old has averaged a goal contribution every 225 minutes for United. Some going, that.

LW: Richarlison

Where do we even begin with this one? In a deal worth up to £60million, the Brazilian forward was one of the most expensive purchases in the summer window.

To be fair to Richarlison, during the World Cup he looked like a signing worth every penny. However, in a Spurs shirt things haven’t been great.

It took him 23 Premier League matches until he finally found the back of the net for Tottenham, only for his side to then concede moments later. The less said the better really.

ST: Darwin Nunez

It’s taken him a while to settle in, but Nunez is absolutely box office every time he steps onto the pitch. You never quite know what he’s going to do next and that is what makes him brilliant.

Sure his finishing can be erratic at times, but 15 goals in his debut season isn’t to be sniffed at.

LW: Raheem Sterling

Sterling had hit double figures for goals in the Premier League in his last five seasons with Manchester City and so it’s easy to see why people thought this move would’ve been a hit.

In reality, he has struggled to replicate the same form while in a Chelsea shirt. Having only scored four league goals so far, this has been his least productive year since 2012–13. Ouch.
