Kylian Mbappe leads the Golden Boot race after moving clear of the likes of Olivier Giroud and Lionel Messi at the top of the World Cup scoring charts.

After Giroud scored against Poland to become France all-time record goalscorer, moving ahead of Thierry Henry, Mbappe put the match to bed with a brace to take his tally in Qatar to five, along with a couple of assists.

Messi meanwhile marked his 1000th career appearance in style in Argentina’s win over Australia, to also move alongside Netherlands star Cody Gakpo and Enner Valencia, who will not be able to add any further to his tally after Ecuador’s group-stage elimination. England’s Bukayo Saka joined them with his third of the tournament against Senegal.

There are a glut of players chasing further behind on two goals each, including Richarlison, Bruno Fernandes and Ferran Torres to name just a few, with the battle for top scorer honours heating up nicely in Qatar.
