Vertonghen, of Tottenham Hotspur, had a difficult game at left-back in the opening 2-1 win over Algeria, conceding a penalty for Marc Wilmots' side.

Now he has been replaced by north-London rival Vermaelen, who has hardly played this season for Arsenal but starts a game in which Belgium will qualify for the last 16 of the World Cup if they win.

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany starts despite a fitness concern while Manchester United's Marouane Fellaini replaces Tottenham's Mousa Dembele in midfield.

Dries Mertens, who scored the winning goal against Algeria, also replaces Nacer Chadli - another Tottenham player to be dropped.
