Julio Cesar is mobbed by team-mates after Brazil win shoot-out v Chile

Brazil came through their last-16 match in breathtaking fashion as they beat Chile 3-2 in a penalty shootout in Belo Horizonte.

The host nation earned a meeting with either Colombia or Uruguay after seeing off Chile in a pulsating clash which saw both sides have chances to clinch it.

The teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after extra time, with Alexis Sanchez having cancelled out David Luiz’s opener for Brazil - though whether Luiz should be credited with the goal is a matter of some debate, given that it appeared to be deflected goalward off the shin of Gonzalo Jara.

Brazil went ahead early on in the shootout, but Chile levelled it at 2-2 after four spot kicks - only for Neymar to bury the fifth after a stuttering run-up to make it 3-2.

And Jara once again tasted terrible luck as his final spot kick for Chile rattled against the left post to send the hosts through.

A controversial decision from English referee Howard Webb ruled out a Hulk goal in the second half for use of the arm, while Chile almost won it at the death as substitute Mauricio Pinilla saw his shot cannon back of the bar with Julio Cesar well beaten.

The lottery of the penalty shoot-out saw further drama as Julio Cesar saved from Pinilla and Sanchez, whilst Willian and Hulk both missed for Brazil.

But with the shoot-out set for sudden death, Jara’s miss means that Brazil qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals for the sixth consecutive time.

PRE-MATCH: Hulk, Fred and Neymar all start for Brazil in an extremely attacking line-up and Fernandinho comes in to replace Paulinho in the only change. The good news for Chile is that Medel and Vidal start after missing training through injury on Thursday. Thiago Silva wins his 50th cap for Brazil.

12’ – PENALTY SHOUT BRAZIL: Hulk powers into the box and goes down under a challenge from Isla. Howard Webb is unmoved.

18’ – GOAL BRAZIL: Silva flicks on Neymar’s corner and David Luiz looks to have bundled in his first for Brazil but replays show it came off Jara’s foot. Luiz still claims the goal anyway - that will be one to sort out later.

25’ – CHANCE NEYMAR: He forges into the box and it’s a good chance but he drags his shot wide.

32’ – GOAL CHILE: It’s really slack defending from Hulk who loses out to Vargas. He feeds Sanchez who finishes excellently past Cesar.

35’ – GREAT DEFENDING SILVA: He deflects Oscar’s cross from under Neymar’s nose.

42’ – GOOD SAVE BRAVO: He tips over Alves’ dipping drive.

54’ – HULK GOAL RULED OUT: A really controversial decision from Howard Webb as the ball looks to have come of Hulk’s shoulder from Marcelo’s ball before he slotted home. Instead he is booked.

65’ – GREAT SAVE CESAR: He gets down brilliantly to save from Aranguiz.

74’ – GREAT DEFENDING MENA: He stretches to turn it away as Jo is about to slot home.

83’ – GREAT SAVE:null
