Spain couldn’t handle Ronaldo last time out in a six-goal thriller but they’ll be confident facing an Iran side that don’t have a player of such capabilities within their ranks. Meanwhile, Carlos Queiroz will have been delighted after his side got off the mark with a 1-0 win over Morocco, and though they were fortunate after appearing second best for much of the game, they’ve shown time and again what a well-organized unit they are under current management. Indeed, four years ago in Brazil, Iran managed to frustrate Argentina until Messi popped up with a 90th minute winner.
While we expect the Iranians to make life difficult for Spain, the tools at La Roja’s disposal are well suited to unlocking a tight, deep-lying defensive set up, with the likes of Iniesta, Silva and Isco all having quick feet as well as being masters at the threaded through ball. Spain’s artists should overcome this challenge easily enough but, given Iran have only tasted defeat in five competitive matches over the past nine years (with four of these finishing 1-0). Spain & Under 2.5 Goals appears a sensible way to eke out some value against the most defensive of sides.
