David Luiz could not hold back floods of tears as he apologised to “all Brazilians” after their German nightmare.

The Selecao collapsed 7-1 in the World Cup semi-final in Belo Horizonte and the defender wore the captain’s armband in the absence of suspended Thiago Silva.

“We wanted to make the people happy but we couldn't do it. Sorry to all Brazilians,” he told reporters after the game.

“Everyone knew how important this was... to see all of Brazil happy.

“They were better than us. It's a day of great sadness. We can only apologise. We are so sorry.

“It’s the end of a dream, and not in the way we wanted. But I will learn from this moment. I'll never give up.”
