Nigel de Jong a été contraint de sortir dès la 9e minute de jeu face au Mexique

The midfielder sustained a groin injury in the win over Mexico in the last-16 and at the very minimum will be sidelined for two weeks.

Even if Netherlands make the final on July 13, De Jong will not be ready to make a return to the team.

A KNVB statement read: "An MRI examination at the hospital confirmed that Nigel de Jong has suffered with a tear in his groin muscle. The 75-time international is therefore ruled out for two-to-four weeks.

"De Jong, who last Sunday in the last 16 match against Mexico was injured after nine minutes, will remain with the team in Brazil to work on his rehabilitation.”

De Jong has been influential in Netherlands' success in Brazil but coach Louis van Gaal must now contemplate being without the tenacious AC Milan star.

Netherlands take on Costa Rica in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
