The former England full-back, who joined Reading from Manchester City last summer, went under the knife last year to try and cure the problem but has only managed 10 appearances for the Royals.
During his career he collected Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup winners' medals with Chelsea. He was also a key part of the Southampton side that made it to the FA Cup final in 2003.
The 33-year-old, who started his career with Southampton back in 1998, played 36 times for England but famously refused an almost certain spot in the 2010 World Cup squad following allegations that his former girlfriend Vanessa Perroncel had an affair with England captain John Terry.
Perroncel and Terry denied the affair, and two newspapers who published the allegations subsequently apologised and accepted that what they printed was untrue.
Bridge refused to shake Terry's hand when the two came up against each other in February 2010, with Terry stretching out his hand but Bridge refusing to take it.
Bridge later moved into a happy relationship with Frankie Sandford of girl band The Saturdays, but his career continued to be overshadowed by the incident - even though Terry himself quickly moved on to even bigger contoversies.
In 2011, for example, Bridge was reportedly involved in a fracas at a wedding when one inebriated fellow guest started chanting, "There's only one John Terry" in Bridge's direction.
