World Cup - Luis Suarez courts controversy with 'punch'

Luis Suarez’s appetite for off-the-ball controversies reared its head once more as he appeared to jab Chile’s Gonzalo Jara in the face.

The incident occurred as the pair tussled at a corner during the first half of the World Cup qualifier, which Oscar Tabarez’s men lost 2-0.

The defeat further intensified the pressure on an already embattled Tabarez - with his side now languishing in sixth place.

Four teams from the region qualify for the 2014 World Cup - with the fifth-placed side facing a play-off.

The forward avoided immediate censure but could face retrospective action if the altercation is not included in the referee’s match report.

In a separate incident, the Liverpool striker was booked later in the game and will now miss his side’s next qualifier against Venezuela in June.

However, if he is retrospectively punished then his loss could provide a fatal blow to Uruguay’s hopes of qualifying for Brazil.
