Lampard and Mourinho

The Chelsea manager and Yahoo Global Football Ambassador spoke in depth with club legend Frank Lampard after he ended his glorious 13-year stay at the club earlier this week.

Mourinho admits he is sad to see Lampard depart Chelsea, but is already looking to the future with Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas making noises about returning to England three years after he joined Barcelona from Arsenal.

Lampard has been linked with a move to New York alongside Atletico Madrid forward David Villa, but Mourinho says he will retire from England duty whatever happens.

"I want him to be happy and he is a very mature guy," said Mourinho. "Sometimes people are getting older but they don’t find maturity, they don’t find the right balance – I think he has matured since I’ve met him and I met him 10 years ago, he is very mature, he knows very well what he wants so I think he will make the right decision.

"I think the World Cup is the perfect way for someone with more than 100 caps to finish his career in the national team, I told him that, don’t go more than the World Cup, the World Cup is the right moment to finish."

Lampard departs Stamford Bridge as Chelsea' s all-time leading goalscorer netting 211 goals in 648 competitions for the club.

He has earned 104 caps for his country scoring 29 goals.

"Finish well and to finish around 110 caps is a crazy number for a few players, he is a not a goalkeeper who can play still at 40 years’ of age, so it is the right moment and after that he will be free to play just for a club and let’s see what is his decision but he is a man to play a major role in a team, not like happened in the last year, playing sometimes, sometimes not playing, playing 60 minutes and not starting every game I think for him, for his mentality, for his personality he is better to get a club and probably a competition where he is really the top man.
