Steven Caulker scores on his England debut in the 4-2 defeat to Sweden at the Friends Arena, Stockholm

Joe Hart (GK): 4 - A shift to forget for the Manchester City custodian. A near-costly miscommunication in the first half with Gary Cahill would be an omen for things to come, as Hart invited the two final, decisive goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Glen Johnson (RB): 6 - Lacked presence initially but eventually picked things up before making way for debutant Carl Jenkinson on 74.

Gary Cahill (CB): 6 - Unlucky not to join central defensive partner Steven Caulker on the scoresheet on more than one occasion, but apart from that and a few good challenges the Chelsea man will have expected more from himself.

Steven Caulker (CB): 8 - The 20-year-old left a memorable impression on his debut. His goal was simply the icing on a cake gift-wrapped by Steven Gerrard's superb free-kick delivery, but the Spurs defender did a commendable job dealing with Ibrahimovic's threat until his withdrawal preceded three more goals from the PSG ace.

Leighton Baines (LB): 8 - As dependable and dangerous as ever up and down the left, the Everton man also provided a pair of key challenges inside the penalty area and proved a handful on the occasional surge into the opposite box.

Steven Gerrard (CM): 7 - Gerrard would have loved to mark his 100th England appearance with the sort of headline performance he has become famous for. Instead, he will have to settle for a fantastic assist and a solid display with the armband.

Leon Osman (CM): 8 - At the grand old age of 31, the debutant's commanding 90 minutes in all areas of the pitch will surely guarantee that he out-caps fellow late bloomers Kevin Davies, Steve Bould and Chris Powell.

Raheem Sterling (AMR): 7 - Was dispossessed by Martin Olsson to spark the move which led to the opener, which clearly motivated the Liverpool teen to step up his game and turn in a promising glimpse of things to come. Was smartly subbed off before the end by Hodgson, leaving his first appearance a mostly positive one.

Tom Cleverley (AMC): 8 - Heavily involved in every early England attack and spell of dominance, the Manchester United player's short-passing philosophy was greatly missed after he made way for Jack Wilshere just after the hour.

Ashley Young (AML): 6 - Participated in some good moves and laced in a neat cross for Danny Welbeck's leveller, but otherwise wasn't nearly the threat everyone knows he can be

Danny Welbeck (FW): 7 - Seems to love playing against Sweden. Always looked likely to score, and did so on 35 minutes with a well-timed sprint to meet Young's delivery. On another day, may have finished the contest with more.

Subs: Carl Jenkinson (for Johnson, 74') 6, Ryan Shawcross (for Caulker, 74') 5, Jack Wilshere (for Cleverley, 61') 5, Tom Huddlestone (for Gerrard, 74') 6, Wilfried Zaha (for Sterling, 85) n/a, Daniel Sturridge (for Young, 61') 6.
