World Juniors: Finland player scores wild no-look goal while sitting down

This year's World Juniors are only two days old, but we may already have the Goal of the Tournament locked up.

In the third period of Finland’s 7-1 demolition of Austria on Monday afternoon, Finnish forward Ville Koivunen deftly tucked in a close-range, no-look backhand effort from the seat of his pants.

The move drew a comparison to Alexander Ovechkin’s legendary goal against the Arizona Coyotes in 2006, despite Koivunen’s tally missing the flair and extravagance that the Russian forward is known for. It's still nothing to sneeze at, though.

The highlight-reel goal was Koivunen's second of the game after he opened the scoring early in the first period. He also assisted on Samuel Helenius's first-period marker to give him three points on the day.

The 7-1 final was actually somewhat flattering to the Austrians, who were outshot 46-9 in the contest.

Koivunen was selected 51st overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2021 NHL Draft. The 18-year-old has 19 points in 30 games this season with Oulun Kärpät of the Finnish Liiga.
