RICHARD Lawson expressed his thanks to the mechanic of teammate Steve Worrall after he helped the rest of Pirates to a 55-34 victory over Redcar.

Having won the opening race of the night, Worrall was withdrawn from the rest of the meeting due to a shoulder injury picked up following a fall in heat six.

Taking an extra ride in the number one’s absence, Lawson went on to record 12 paid 14 on the night. Lewis Kerr top-scored for the Bears with 12.

Assessing the meeting as a whole, Whitehaven-born Lawson said: “The starts were important, so fortunately we were on top of that and the track rode very well.

“Obviously, they did a lot of work on it considering how much rain came down.

“We were unlucky to lose Stevie, but with the extra ride I was able to use his tyre and if you can get a fresh edge halfway through the meeting then it gives you a little bit of an advantage.

“I would just like to say fair play to Steve's mechanic for mucking in and helping the rest of us out once Steve had to sit most of the meeting out.”

Victory put Pirates second in the table, while Glasgow could overcome them with meetings in hand and book an automatic place in the play-off semi-finals.
