Manchester United will consider the prospect of making the loan of Wout Weghorst into a permanent deal if he becomes a success at Old Trafford, TEAMtalk can reveal.
The towering Dutch striker has on Friday night sealed his move to Old Trafford on loan for the rest of the season. Ending his agreement to play for Besiktas on a season’s loan, United will reportedly pay the Turkish side around £3m for the 6ft 6in frontman.
They will also cover his wages – estimated to be around £40,000 a week – during his time at Old Trafford.
The move, though, has raised plenty of eyebrows. His record in the Premier League for parent club Burnley was less than successful. Indeed, he scored just two goals in 20 appearances for the Clarets as they succumbed to relegation.
As a result, the 30-year-old striker was allowed to depart on a temporary deal.
But after some solid displays at the World Cup for the Netherlands, he will potentially make his Manchester United debut in Wednesday’s trip to take on Crystal Palace.
Indeed, his arrival fills the gap in the squad vacated by Cristiano Ronaldo. And while a very different player to the veteran Portuguese star, Erik ten Hag has shown in the past that he likes a tall option up front.
Now TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey has explained how the move for Weghorst came about.
And he also reckons there is a chance United could make the move permanent in the summer.
United could make Wout Weghorst signing permanent in summer
“The move for Wout Weghorst has been approved by Erik Ten Hag,” Bailey told TEAMtalk. “It is clearly a player that appeals to him and it is important to remember that Ten Hag likes operating with this type of player.”
Bailey added: “Look at his Ajax days with Sebastian Haller. He certainly knows how to get the best out of targetmen – and that is clearly why he has gone for Weghorst.”
Discussing his prospects of making the move a permanent one in the summer, he added: “It is initially a loan deal for Weghorst. But then much will depend on how things go at Old Trafford. If he is a huge success then they might welll look at it….
“However, the ironic thing is that if he does help fire them into the top four – he is less likely to stay as United are likely to then target a big name summer signing.”
Bailey also reckons Burnley will have a big say on the striker’s future.
Vincenot Kompany’s side are well placed to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. And prior to Saturday’s round of fixtures, the Championship leaders hold a 14-point buffer to third in the table.
As a result, they could look to welcome Weghorst back into the fold in the likely event of their return to the top flight.
“There is also the fact that Burnley in all likelihood will be back in the Premier League too next season and they could very well want him back at Turf Moor.”
