WSOF Releases Champion Jessica Aguilar to Pursue UFC

World Series of Fighting on Monday announced that it has released women’s world strawweight champion Jessica “JAG” Aguilar from her remaining contractual obligations in order to pursue fights worthy of her caliber.

Aguilar still had one fight remaining on her current WSOF contract, but she wants to fight more consistently than she has been and against other women considered top contenders in the world. WSOF admittedly doesn’t yet have a strong enough strawweight roster to accommodate Aguilar.

“We wish Jessica all the best, and hope that she will achieve everything she wants to in her career that is blossoming,” said WSOF President Ray Sefo. “We sat down with Jessica and her manager and we all agreed that she needs to move on to a place where she can compete against the best 115 pound women in the world.

“We have an incredible and fast-growing roster of world-class athletes at WSOF,” continued Sefo, “but we do not have the best fighters in this particular women’s weight class, so it was time to shake hands and amicably part ways.”

While Aguilar (19-4) has previously fought for Bellator, don't expect her back there any time soon. Bellator eliminated its women's roster under the leadership of Bjorn Rebney. Even though new company president Scott Coker has started to bring women back into the fold, they’ve been slow in getting off the ground and have focused primarily on the featherweight division.

Aguilar has made it clear that she’s intends to take her 10-fight winning streak to the UFC.

While under contract with WSOF, the UFC and Aguilar couldn’t talk, but that hurdle has now been removed.

“I haven't fought in two months, and I think my next step is to be the UFC champion. I've decided to become the next UFC champion,” Aguilar said during an interview on the MMA Hour on Monday.

“The UFC wasn't allowed to talk to me while I was under contract with WSOF, so I've solved that issue for them. I'm a free agent.”

Having defeated the likes of former Invicta and UFC champ Carla Esparza and venerable Japanese champion Megumi Fujii, Aguilar would certainly be an exciting addition to the UFC strawweight roster. Don’t be surprised if she gets a call from the UFC and a deal is worked out in short order.
