World No 1 Iga Swiatek and third seed Jessica Pegula were late withdrawals from the Adelaide International 2, but the field remains stacked with sixth Grand Slam champions in the main draw.

The exertions of the United Cup appear to have taken its toll on Swiatek and Pegula and the duo pulled out of the WTA 500 event on the back of the back of competing in the semi-final of the mixed tournament.

The United States defeated Poland 5-0 to secure their place in the final with Pegula beating Swiatek in Friday’s opening rubber while the American also teamed up with Taylor Fritz in the doubles on Saturday.

Swiatek withdrew due to a right shoulder injury while Pegula is out due to a conflict in schedule as the United States will take part in the final on Sunday.

It leaves world No 2 Ons Jabeur as the highest-ranked player in the draw and the Tunisian, who has a bye into the second round, could face former French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova, who faces a qualifier or lucky loser in the opening round, first up.

Jabeur herself will be need a quick turnover as she is competing in the semi-final of the Adelaide International 1 on Saturday and a victory could see her play on Sunday.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina will be involved in one of the ties of the first round as she is up against fifth seed Daria Kasatkina.

And the draw doesn’t get easier as Jabeur or Krejcikova could await in the quarter-final.

Seventh seed Madison Keys, another player involved in the United Cup, is also in the bottom half and the American could potentially take on two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the second round.

WTA Finals champion Caroline Garcia leads the top half of the draw and the Frenchwoman faces either Beatriz Haddad Maia or a qualifier/lucky loser in the second round.

Former world No 1 and two-time Grand Slam winner Garbine Muguruza was handed a tricky draw as she is up against eighth seed Belinda Bencic with the winner likely to face 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the second round.

Another former world No 1 and two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka is also in the draw and she faces sixth seed Veronika Kudermetova first up.
