After a good week at home following Suzuka, I was back on a plane on Tuesday for another long-haul flight. I’m feeling fresh and I’ve already received some good news in China, that I’ve secured the prestigious British Racing Drivers’ Club’s Gold Star for a second-straight year.
That follows Chevrolet sealing the 2012 WTCC manufacturers’ championship in Japan a fortnight ago. Winning three manufacturer titles in a row is a great achievement for the team, but I’ve still got one big goal for the year; to become world champion.
With just Macau to come after this weekend’s Shanghai’s races, my Chevrolet team-mate Muller and I couldn’t be closer. We’re tied at the top of the drivers’ championship and fighting it out for the title.
It’s a situation we’re actually strangely familiar with. Yvan and I started the Suzuka weekend level, and managed to score exactly the same number of points over the two races there.
There’s still a lot of racing to come, but I feel like I’m in a good position going into the last two race weekends and I’m incredibly determined to achieve my dream. Hopefully we can translate that into a points lead over the course of the weekend.
We visited Shanghai for the first time in 2011, racing at Shanghai Tianma Circuit, and I had a tough run. In a similar situation to this year, fighting Yvan for the title, I finished ahead of him in the opening race, but a clash with Gabriele Tarquini early in the second race dented my world title charge, finishing third as Yvan won.
I’ll need a cleaner run this year, but I’ll still be giving it everything, rest assured.
When you watch this weekend’s race, keep an eye out for my early ‘Movember’ progress. A very close friend of the family recently lost their battle with cancer, so I, along with 31 members of Team Huffy’s WTCC Superstar Supporters, will be getting behind this great cause and growing a ‘mo’.
So far, we’ve raised almost £1,500 for prostate and testicular cancer charities, and we’re ranked just outside the top 20 of over 10,000 ‘Movember’ teams registered in the UK! Big thanks to everyone who’s already donated.
Hopefully I can make Shanghai’s podium a ‘modium’ this weekend!
