Yahoo Daily Fantasy: Champions League Gameweek 7 (part 2) preview

The Champions League continues this week and we’re back with the second part of Gameweek 7 – which means a midweek round of Yahoo Daily Fantasy to sink your teeth in to.

There are 8 more teams in action this Tuesday and Wednesday, including two English teams, which means 4 games for Daily Fantasy spread evenly across the two days. Last week

As we mentioned last week, Champions League Daily Fantasy works in exactly the same way as Premier League Daily Fantasy. You can enter any number of leagues that run for Tuesday or Wednesday’s matches, or over both matchdays.

So who should you pick, and who should you avoid this week? Last week we saw teams who were underwhelming domestically (Dortmund, Barcelona, Arsenal) all lost, while teams who are on a strong run (PSG, Benfica, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich) all won, so will that continue tonight and tomorrow?

Tuesday Must-haves

Manchester City v AS Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen v Atletico Madrid

Atletico are struggling domestically but manager Diego Simeone has made it no secret that he finally wants that Champions League gong after two heartbreaking defeats to Real Madrid. After topping their Champions League group ahead of Bayern Munich, the Atletico of old should be seen tonight in Germany. Bearing that in mind, many of their defenders look good value – especially if goalkeeper Jan Oblak (£16) is cleared to play. Fullback Juanfran is a major doubt so Sime Vrsaljko (£15) is likely to get the nod.

It could be easy to think this is an easy game for Pep Guardiola’s side, but Spurs found that underestimating the free-scoring leaders of Ligue 1 was costly. Defenders Dijbril Sidibe and Benjamin Mendy (both £15) like to attack and could get some joy against City’s porous defence. City should see most of the ball at the Etihad so expect David Silva (£23) to be heavily involved – Silva gets the nod from us over Kevin De Bruyne (£24) because the Belgian has had too many single figure returns and has only scored 2 goals since the beginning of November. Monaco’s Thomas Lemar (£22) is one of the hottest prospects in Europe and could run rings around City’s more static midfield.

Up front, with Gabriel Jesus injured, Sergio Aguero (£26) is all but guaranteed to start for City and Radamel Falcao (£28) has 20 goals and 3 assists in 26 games this year for Monaco. If you’re looking for a forward who could be a point of difference, Kylian Mbappe (£17) could be your man, there is no guarantee over how much game time he will see but if he is given a run out he will certainly make use of it. Antoine Griezmann (£27) is expensive but Bayer’s defence is young (average age about 22) and it leaks goals that the Frenchman should be able to exploit.

Must-nots

Claudio Bravo (£13) – had a good game against Huddersfield, but this is a major step up. Ilkay Gundogan (£16), Gabriel Jesus (£20) (both injured), Bayer’s Hakan Calhanoglu (£23) – he’s been banned for the rest of the season. Leroy Sane (£17) and Koke (£25) – they just aren’t any Fantasy value for money.

Wednesday Must-haves

Sevilla v Leicester City, Porto v Juventus

[Wednesday’s Champions League games in Opta numbers]

Wes Morgan and Jamie Vardy
Wes Morgan and Jamie Vardy

Although Leicester topped their Champions League group back in December, since then their form has deserted them and they face high-flying Sevilla in their Last 16 tie. With a daunting away trip to the south of the Spain, can the Foxes re-find their attacking mojo? Wednesday’s other match sees Serie A table-toppers meet Portugal’s Porto. On paper this seems like a comfortable win for Juventus is in the offing but we saw when Benfica beat Dortmund last week that winning in Portugal is never easy.

With Leicester’s mis-firing attack, all of Sevilla’s defenders look attractive, as does goalkeeper Sergio Rico (£15). In the midfield, Samir Nasri is having a renaissance under Jorge Sampaoli and he is very attractively priced at £18. Riyad Mahrez’s (£18) Premier League form has been dire recently, however he has 4 goals in his 5 Champions League games so far, can he tap back into that form? Juan Cuadrado (£18) has been in a good run of form for Juventus recently and he could be the Old Lady’s best buy, especially with Miralem Pjanic undergoing a poor Fantasy run.

Stefan Jovetic (£19) has made a good start to life at Sevilla, scoring twice and recording 3 assists in his first 6 games and if Wissam Ben Yedder (£25) was looking for anyone to break his scoring a drought against, it would probably the Foxes’ defence.

Must-nots

Anyone from Leicester’s defence. It has been a basket case for some time now, so don’t expect the likes of Danny Simpson, Wes Morgan or Robert Huth to get any strong returns on Wednesday. The same goes for Jamie Vardy, several times this season we’ve thought he would break his scoring duck but the striker hasn’t been having a party for a while now. Mario Mandzukic, only 1 goal in his last 10, and with Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain in the team, there are better options elsewhere for your forwards.
