Yahoo Sport UK horse racing Lucky 15 – Saturday’s top selections

Yahoo Sport UK has teamed up with Bet4Causes to bring you a preview of the day’s British racing – and The Night Hawk marks your card.

Each day we will mark your card, providing a preview of the day’s racing and offering what the experts feel will be the value bets of the day.

After successive winning NAP selections in the last THREE days, take a look at our Lucky 15 selections (four singles, six doubles, four trebles and a four-fold) for the British meetings and Santa Anita’s Breeders’ Cup card on Saturday, November 5, 2016.

LUCKY 15 SELECTIONS

SCEAU ROYAL (Wincanton 2.10) can take the Grade 2 Elite Hurdle for trainer Alan King. He landed the Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham last December, beating subsequent Group 1 scorer Adrien Du Pont, before completing a hat-trick of small-field wins at short odds in January. However, he was a well-held 12th in the Triumph Hurdle itself and was perhaps over the top when a distant sixth of nine to Apple’s Jade in the Grade 1 4-Y-O Anniversary Hurdle at Aintree to end last season. He looked back to his best on his seasonal return when slamming Leoncavallo (5th in last season’s Triumph Hurdle) in a 2m½f event at Cheltenham last month and created a very favourable impression, one that has seen him enter the market for the Champion Hurdle. A similar level of form may be enough to see him score over this 1m7½f event which the yard has yet to win.

ARROGATE (Santa Anita 00:35) can land the Breeders’ Cup Classic and give trainer Bob Baffert a hat-trick in the $6m Grade 1 feature. The selection of Arrogate over California Chrome is one of potential greatness over greatness. Arrogate won the 1m2f Travers Stakes in a Saratoga track record on his first attempt in stakes company, beating Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator and Belmont Stakes winner Creator in the process. That record had stood for 37 years and it was a deeply impressive performance from the late-developing three-year-old son of Unbridled’s Song. California Chrome has won all six races for Art Sherman this year, including the Dubai World Cup, and will be retired after the race following a stellar career.

KRUZHLININ (Aintree 2.05), on his day, is a decent staying chaser. Though he is not easy to catch right, the Philip Hobbs-trained nine-year-old has run well fresh in the past and makes his seasonal debut in a 3m½f handicap hurdle, a sphere that is not totally alien to him – he was second at Musselburgh over a similar trip last January to subsequent Grade 1 Grand National Hurdle Stakes winner and Grade 1 Colonial Cup Chase winner Dawalan. That was his first attempt over hurdles since May 2012 and he appeared to enjoy himself in front before collared late on. He then followed up in the mud over fences at Kempton off a mark of 138 before the handicapper hiked him 10lb and that looked over-excessive at the time. He subsequently finished fifth in the Ultima Chase at the Cheltenham Festival but was pulled up in the Grand National. He is back down to his last winning mark of 138 and should go well at a fair price.

ZARKANDAR (Aintree 2.40) is a four-time Grade 1-winning hurdler whose best days are probably behind him. Now approaching the age of 10, the Paul Nicholls-trained son of Azamour seeks his first win since November 2014, when winning the 3m Grade 1 Grand Prix d’Automne at Auteuil. A dual Grade 1 winner as a juvenile, he missed last season due to injury but he has won two of his five races at this track, including when taking the Grade 1 Aintree Hurdle in 2013. If he retains his old spark, he should be fighting out the finish of the 2m4f hurdle, despite the 517-day lay-off.
