Horse racing: Yahoo Sport UK Lucky 15 – Thursday’s top selections

THURSDAY'S RACING AT WINCANTON ABANDONED - FROZEN TRACK

Yahoo Sport UK has teamed up with Bet4Causes to bring you a preview of the day’s British racing – and The Night Hawk marks your card.

Each day will mark your card, providing a preview of the day’s racing and offering what the experts feel will be the value bets of the day.

Take a look at our Lucky 15 selections (four singles, six doubles, four trebles and a four-fold) for the British meetings on Thursday, December 1, 2016.

LUCKY 15 SELECTIONS

BANDSMAN (Market Rasen 12.55) had been placed in four bumpers before he was well supported for the switch to hurdles over 2m at Kempton last time. Rated 98 on the Flat, the Dan Skelton-trained five-year-old tried to make a move for home before two out, but the well-backed favourite Top Tug wore him down in the closing stages to score by four lengths. Nevertheless, this was an impressive first attempt in this sphere and he gets the stiffer test he looked in need of, taking on 10 rivals in the 2m2½f novices’ hurdle.

OLIVER’S HILL (Leicester 3.10) landed a Plumpton 2m3½f handicap chase off a mark of 100 in mid-October and would have finished runner-up off a 5lb higher mark, had he not fallen in next time up, again at Plumpton, in a race won by Dawnieriver. The Lawney Hill-trained seven-year-old may have had his confidence knocked, because he was a below-par third at Lingfield last time. However, he drops to a mark of 104 today and goes up in trip to 2m6½f for a handicap chase that lacks strength in depth and he may well bounce back.

LONDON PRIZE (Leicester 1.05), a half-brother to six winners on the Flat, won a Worcester bumper on his debut in June last year and was then put away, reappearing in April at Fontwell, when finishing second to the decent Alfredo. The Ian Williams-trained five-year-old won twice in Flat handicaps at Newbury (2m) and Nottingham (1m6f, off a mark of 75) in October before attempting hurdles for the first time at Down Royal early last month. He travelled well but did not find much at the business end when third to Bel Ami De Sivola over the 2m trip. Today’s novices’ hurdle looks a weaker event and he is entitled to improve for this second attempt.

FIRMDECISIONS (Chelmsford City 5.45) seeks a hat-trick of all-weather wins on this track, having scored twice by a head in decent 7f handicaps. He overcame a wide draw on both occasions and Dean Ivory’s representative won off a mark of 91 last year so still looks fairly treated off today’s rating of 87. He came from off the pace to win well on both occasions and while he attempts to win over a mile for the first time, he has had only one previous try over this trip before (he is 6-17 over 7f). The way he settles suggests he is worth another crack over this distance.
