LUCKY 15 SELECTIONS

BRIAN THE SNAIL (Catterick 1.20) is perhaps the silliest-named horse that runs in Britain today. Although we could wax lyrical about the Magic Roundabout, how gorgeous actress Emma Thompson’s father, Eric, voiced the programme and how he said he was most like the character of Brian The Snail, we won’t. Instead, we will simply tell you that the selection, a son of Zebedee (honest), was backed into favouritism for his debut at Pontefract last month and came through to win very comfortably. The horse he beat, Father Mckenzie, had finished second on four of his six previous runs and subsequently got off the mark next time, so the form stacks up. The Richard Fahey yard rarely mince their words and in the afterglow of victory, assistant trainer Robin O’Ryan stated that he would come on a lot for the experience. He admitted: “He is a horse we like a lot and it will be a surprise if he doesn’t go on to better things”. Take him at his word, as Brian The Snail is no slouch and is expected to land the 5f novices’ event.

COURT KING (Bangor-on-Dee 3.15) was raised 6lb for his latest run at Exeter in attempting a hat-trick after victories at Uttoxeter and the 2m7f over course and distance last month. However, the Peter Bowen-trained five-year-old ultimately succumbed to I’m In Charge in that novices’ hurdle, despite rallying late on. The fitting of a hood appears to have helped him; previously, he had travelled well in his races, but he wasn’t finishing them off. Though he is up another 3lb and while the suspicion is that the handicapper may well soon have his measure, the step back in trip to 2m5½f was perhaps against him last time and it is still most likely that today’s trip will bring forth a little more improvement, even under top weight in this handicap for horses rated 0-105.

NEPETA (Newcastle 5.30) appeared comprehensively beaten by Rashford’s Double when the pair met in a seven-runner 1m nursery over course and distance 17 days ago. The pair meet again in a similar event but Mark Johnston’s representative is taken to come out on top this time, given there is an 11lb turnaround in the weights for a length-and-a-half defeat. The selection, who won at Musselburgh over 7f in August, saw out the mile well on her all-weather debut in attempting to make all the running, and while a fair percentage of front-runners have been susceptible to closers on the straight track, Nepeta looks fairly weighted today.

CALL TO ORDER (Chepstow 4.05) cost 55,000 euros as a foal, 160,000 euros as a three-year-old and his dam was a useful bumper and 2m2f hurdle winner. The Jonjo O’Neill-trained six-year-old showed plenty of promise himself in two bumpers last year (runner-up on both occasions in testing ground) before running a fair third in a maiden hurdle at Doncaster last December, when drawing clear of the remainder over a 2m½f trip that was plenty sharp enough. Returning from a 10-month break, he looked in need of the run when a well-supported sixth of 11 to Geordie Des Champs here over 2m just 17 days ago. He should come on a ton for that blow and should relish the step up in trip to a more suitable 2m3½f for this competitive-looking maiden hurdle.
