LUCKY 15 SELECTIONS

FIRST VOYAGE (Nottingham 4.50) has been the bridesmaid on his first two starts for Charlie Appleby and may be able to go one better in the 1m2f maiden, which has attracted a field of 14. The Godolphin-owned Dubai gelding was made favourite for his debut at Ponterfract but forfeited a good draw with a slow start and while he stayed on, there were understandable signs of greenness. On his last start, over 8½f at Windsor, he chased Eljeemi all the way in a race where few got into it, but was downed by two and a quarter lengths. Appleby equips the selection with first-time cheekpieces this afternoon and given natural progression, he should be in the shake-up again with the step up in trip and good ground to his liking. Any further rain would help.

MISTER MANDURO (Chelmsford City 1.30) has also had two previous starts and has made the frame on each occasion. The Mark Johnstone-trained juvenile son of Maduro is a half-brother to a Listed winner and a Group 3 scorer, out of a winning stayer (dam Listed placed). He did not have the best of starts, stumbling early on in a 1m Sandown maiden last month and eventually finished just over 2l behind the winner, The Grape Escape. He appeared to lack a gear change when collared by Ahlan Bil Zain at Newcastle over a similar trip on his all-weather debut last week, but that track has been a boon for those coming from off the pace in recent weeks. While his pedigree suggests he needs further, Mister Manduro may well have enough experience to deal with five rivals in the 1m maiden.

RED RANNAGH (Kempton Park 8.15) needs plenty to fall his way but is worth chancing in the 1m4f handicap. Having joined David Simcock following a win in a Dundalk maiden at the fourth attempt last November, the three-year-old son of Teofilo has been a little frustrating, getting a little too far out of his ground in a couple of decent handicaps this summer. Jamie Spencer’s mount needs to come off a decent pace to show his best and did not get that when a strong-finishing third to Mengali Khan over 1m3f here last month. The extra furlong tonight should help, although with just eight runners, there is no guarantee of a stiff pace.

LITTLE WINDMILL (Fakenham 4.40) must overcome a 9lb hike in the weights to score in the 2m4f handicap chase for trainer Neil King. The six-year-old won at Plumpton last month and followed up at Stratford off a mark of 97, so is on a hat-trick. However, it would mean a career-best if he should score off 106 today. The easing ground would probably not help his chance, but there may be a little more to come from this pint-size individual, whose wind operation in the summer appears to have helped his confidence.
