Yahoo Sport UK’s horse racing Lucky 15 – Thursday’s top selections

Yahoo Sport UK has teamed up with Bet4Causes to bring you a preview of the day’s British racing – and The Night Hawk marks your card.

Each day we will provide you with a preview of the day’s racing, offering what the experts feel will be the value bets of the day.

Take a look at our Lucky 15 selections (four singles, six doubles, four trebles and a four-fold) for the British and Irish meetings on Thursday, July 21, 2016.

LUCKY 15 SELECTIONS

GOODWOOD MIRAGE (Sandown Park 3.40) seeks his first win for 21 months in the 1m2f handicap for horses with an official rating of 0-85. The Michael Bell-trained six-year-old, who will be ridden by Frankie Dettori, has run a couple of good races in defeat this season, notably when a narrow runner-up to Shakopee in a similar event at Doncaster last week. He was a little unlucky that day, having been trapped in a pocket and being extricated too late, but if there is a sound gallop, he should hold every chance as he races off the same mark of 85.

ALCOCK AND BROWN (Worcester 4.00), a dual winner for Andy Oliver on the Flat in Ireland, is now with jumps trainer Dan Skelton. He has had two starts over hurdles, both over 2m, and has run with credit both times, finishing runner-up to a previous winner at Worcester and following-up with victory over this same course and distance 17 days ago. While he is capable of scoring again in a 2m novices’ hurdle, it will be interesting to see how much progress can be made when he is upped in trip, as he looks very likely to improve over further.

TOP OF THE BANK (Doncaster 7.25) has been gelded over the winter, having lost his way after a good start to his career. With cheekpieces fitted for the first time on his seasonal debut at Thirsk, following a seven-month break, Kevin Ryan’s charge scored with a bit to spare. That was on good ground in April, so there is a doubt that since he has had another spell on the sidelines, he may just need a run to get him straight. However, he runs off the same mark of 80 for his handicap debut and should not mind this quicker ground.

DENINGY (Newbury 6.05) would look to hold an obvious chance in what looks an ordinary 6f maiden. The Charlie Appleby-trained son of Sepoy has had one previous run, when a narrow third to subsequent Group 3 Albany Stakes fourth Brave Anna and subsequent Group 2 Norfolk Stakes runner-up The Last Lion on good to soft ground at Ascot. A replication of anything like that form, on vastly different ground it has to be said, means he should be a cut above his seven rivals. The fitting of a hood and a step up to 6f are both positives.
